I am finally going to break down and experiment with hard line I think... I know someone that wants to get rid of a couple line counter reels. They are a little small for lead core I think. They will hold 290 yards of 14 lb. Do you think I will be able to get enough lead core on this size of reel?? I will be mainly fishing the river so I won't be fishing super deep. I think I'm going to go with 18lb. lead core.
I would think you'd only get about 4 or 5 colors of line on that reel. If you can get say 100 yds of good backing on there, then say 3 colors of leadcore, would think you could still troll with that to moderate depths. looking forward to hear what others have to say. good luck. Jack.
I think you would be better of getting a reel you can get all 10 colors of leadcore on for learning to use leadcore. As someone else said you could do segmented leadcore with a backing but I think it is easier to learn how to use and get the right depth with a full 10 colors on a reel.
You don't have to spend an arm and a leg on a leadcore reel in my opinion, especially if you aren't going to be using it every day. I would suggest getting an Accudepth 47 LC for about $50 or go and get a Penn 209. The Penn doesn't have a linecounter but it works well for leadcore. I prefer a linecounter myself.
Gander has a large CHEAP line counter. I went with two and have been very happy. Accudepth's are nice...but for lead, you really don't need to spend that much money. I still use the line counter function, and not color counting. Save the money you would spend on an Accudepth, and use it for a Fall trolling reel...
I have some of the Diawa and Cabela's brand line counters and they both work fine. I like the Diawa a little better and I use the 17's w/ Fireline but like the 20 and 27 for leadcore. Fishing the river I have not found a need for all 10 colors so this size has worked fine for me.
If you are just starting out and can get a deal on these other reels that is probably the best option. If you like it and want to make an investment then go shopping.
Good luck with your purchase and using the leadcore.
I run 2 Okuma Magnda Pros without counters $30 each and picked up 2 Abu Line Counters of the same size as the Okuma 30's for $20 each and both have served me well.
