When does a person speed troll?? Is it a summer thing and what speeds are we talking?? I'm just curious when everyone trys this what the conditions are that they feel to try speed trolling?? What kind of crank do you use? Planer boards?? Tight Lines!

I will try speed trolling anytime I'm convinced there are fish in the area and I'm just not catching them. I will run cranks up to 3-3.5 mph. I find that some cranks run better at high speeds than others. Jointed cranks have a tendency to burn out and come to the surface at higher speeds.

Cranks must be well tuned to run high speeds as well. This is actually how I tend to tune my cranks, if you tune them at 3mph and they run true, they should run extrordinary at 1-2 mph. #5 and #7 shad raps can be good high speed cranks as can Wally Divers (these especiall must be tuned) and Flicker shads. I use speed trolling to trigger "reaction bites". Sometimes when I'm getting one here or there, burning the cranks past the eyes will trigger 5x the strikes.

Typical speed trolling time is early summer through early fall.

I'll run 2.5 with shad raps ,flicker shads and lures along those lines this time of year just above the steep drops catching the fish that rush the shallows hitting bait then drop over the edge to get back to cooler water.

Trolling walley divers and shad raps anywhere between 1.5 and 3.5 mph was producing on Pepin for me this past week.

I speed troll during the summer months when i cant get fish using conventional methods. I think that by ripping a bait by them you garner allot of reaction strikes from fish that are inactive. It works good on the Great Lakes on sunny, flat calm days days when the fish are holding deep in the clear water. Rip a tuned 3/8 oz. Rattle Tot by em and theres a good chance theyll whack it...Try it with spoons and mini-disks too!

Speed trolling in the summer months can trigger some serious walleye action. Salmo cranks are excellent for speed trolling, they always run true at high speeds and never blow out.. Speed trolling gives summer fish a "get it now or never" bait. Unlike spring, fall or winter fishing. Summer fish in stained and warm water are more likely to react to a fast bait vs a slow troll..
