Lake Vermillion, MN INFO Please

#695264 - 07/27/08 12:38 PM

My family and I are possibly planning a trip up to Vermillion this fall instead of the longer trip to Ontario. Any info on resorts or fishing would help us make a decision. I've heard its a good walleye and muskie fishery. We would be going in the begining of September if that makes a big differance on the fishing. thank you

I'll be watching with great interest as I'm looking for the same trip. Canada is getting a bit spendy and would like to take one more northern trip this fall.

Fortune Bay Casino has everything and is probably the cheapest. 800/555-1714

Welcome to In-Depth Outdoors trphyhuntr!!!
I fished Lake Vermilion once several years ago, it was so long ago I do not even remember where we stayed but the fishing was great. I am sure there will be others that will jump in here with some more info for you.

What are your priorities for a resort? Location, cost, services?

Fishing should be good in September. You wont likely have 100 fish days, but you should get some action.

It's a great lake with lots of great fishing. I would stay at the casino as it is the best for the money. The resorts are great but are going to cost more. Bay View Lodge is one I have stayed in a couple of times. Great people and great food. Caught my biggest sky there a couple of years back pre-fishing for a bass tourney. 47 1/2 on 8 pound line and a 1/8 oz jig. Seen many muskies on that lake. Good luck.

Check out http://www.lakevermilion.com/
They have a section "private Cabins for rent"
We rented cabin 1 of Zaudtke's Cabins back in 2002 and in 2003. Love the lake, Fishing was decent considering first time there. Cought a few Walleyes, one of the guys boated a 42" Muskie.

Thanks for the post fellas I am new and unfortunatly taken more from the site than I have given back. Now that Im signed up you will see more of me. As for alodging on Vermillion we are just lookn for somewhere on the lake who offers a good guide service. Is the casino a normal casino hotel or do they rent out cabins??? Also anyone have much experience on this lake in Sept. I know the time of year on some lakes makes a world of differance. thnks again

As for fishing, Sept is usually good but can be tough if you hit it right at turnover. It is a cold lake in a cold area of MN (heck, even the water flows north up there)-so things can happen earlier than other MN lakes.

I cant think of any resorts that offer a good guide service. But there are several locals that live on the lake and guide. They would pick you up at the dock if you wanted them too (Ace, Cliff, etc). They guide walleye or musky and know the lake very well.

If you dont mind big water, I would stay near Big Bay that time of year. It offers access to a lot of the lake and whatever kind of fishing you want to do (deep, shallow, trolling, casting, walleye, musky, etc).

Bayview is nice, plus they have decent night life. The dock fishing there can be very good.

The casino is nice, protected marina too. Everetts is also very nice, right next to the casino and in a protected bay. The owners there will give some good advice for what you are after.

Daisy Bay is tucked back a bit, but lower priced cabins that do just fine. Very nice if you want a quiet resort with everything you need.

I have had good luck w/ private cabins as well.

On the west end, Vermilion Dam lodge's owners are musky fanatics.

I would highly suggest Vermillion Damn Lodge, talk to Ed Tausk, tell him Bob J from Cottage Grove sent you! Just returned from there once again, always great service, good lake advice, Ed is a stand up guy.

In the private cabin website above I rented BOBS CAMP this past spring.Cheap, clean and friendly people.Tell them Pat sent ya if you go.I like the privacy of private cabins over resorts.PM me if you got ques on Bobs Camp Cabin. The only drawback is that it has a outhouse but no biggie for me.Its on Pike Bay and there's a good guide next door,I think its Cliff.I've heard the Casino is good and reasonable but its not my atmosphere.Good luck!

If you can, go in Oct, the fishing is better than in Sept but it could snow.... If you are hiring a guide Cliff or Phil catch a lot of Walleyes no matter what time of year.

Same as the above posts. Rented a private cabin by Moccasin Point the 3rd week of July and would recomend Cliff Wagenbach.
