The American Queen visits Red Wing

#695288 - 07/27/08 03:50 PM

If you happened to visit the river front in Red Wing this weekend, chances are you witnessed the largest steamboat in the world. The American Queen is a jaw dropper and makes the cameras come out.

Quote:

A floating Victorian palace of fretwork and fluted stacks, the American Queen is the world's largest steamboat. The American Queen steamboat plies the Mississippi River on trips through the Old South and America's Heartland, and along Wilderness rivers. The lavish Grand Saloon is the setting for nightly entertainment on American Queen cruises. The saloon looks like a 19th-century opera house with a proscenium stage and private box seats on the mezzanine level. On the American Queen riverboat, the Mark Twain gallery is filled with antiques and has comfortable seating for reading. The American Queen also has a covered "front porch" on the bow of its Texas Deck. Lined with rocking chairs, the porch is the perfect spot on the American Queen steamboat for relaxing with a mint julep or lemonade. On American Queen riverboat cruises, you can follow the ship's route in the Chart Room, decorated with genuine old-fashioned piloting instruments, or visit the American Queen Engine Room to talk with engineers and watch the steam engines at work. After hours, listen to jazz, Dixieland and ragtime in the Engine Room Bar. The staterooms on the American Queen riverboat resemble Victorian bedrooms with patterned wallpaper and antique furnishings from the era. Outside cabins have bay windows or windowed French doors.

I think a person might be able to drift some cut bait off her stern.

There were actually some residents in Hastings that had a petition agaist them playing the "Choliopee" as they go through town! What a joke..... People need to get real when a treasure comes through towns like this. Last time a saw her she had President Jimmy Carter on her!Was pretty cool!

Yes, she did come through last year. I was able to take my mom down to Lock 2 to watch up close and personal as it locked through. Awesome little boat. (Just another perk of having a dam job. )

I do not see the fascination with the big piece of floating
There is nothing historical about the darn boat. It is not a paddle wheel; it is a big barge with a lot of garbage on top and the paddle is there just for looks.

I also don’t think there is anything more annoying than when the caliope (chit whistles) are fired up. You can hear the darn thing coming and leaving for miles. Sure is buzz killer on a good clam night while chasing cats It has to be deafening when being on the big pile I have never even heard one that sounded like it was close to being in tune either

Wow….I feel better now that I got that off my chest

Oh Bret I think you need some anger management counseling. How can talk like that about such a National Treasure?

I think Bret is just hiding his true feelings I even called him up yesterday on his cell when the American Queen was leaving La Crosse just so he could once again hear his favorite music from the Caliope while he was on a road trip. I think we must have lost our connection - - - - he wasn't on the phone long.

I brought my Mother to see it leave last week and she thought that was pretty neat - caliope and all. What a floating piece of historical treasure. It is amazing how many people are there each time the boat leaves.

Ok - I've been away for a while. The only explanation is that you can pick your friends, your enemies and your nose, but you CANNOT pick your relatives!

Back on track - did you see the Corps tow, the MV Mississippi, come through in the early morning hours last weekend? Not a little boat by any means either...

This one? What was she doing up here?

There was a TON of tow traffic this last weekend. So much that I figured I would fish P4 Sunday evening, but a friendly lock operator "G" gave me a couple windows to ensure I didn't get stuck for hours.

Speaking of that...I was listening to the marine radio on Saturday when a number of tows were approaching Lock 3. Every 15 minutes a pleasure craft called in to ask about lockage times.

At one point it was going to be 2.5 hourse before a pleasure boat could lock through. The most freindly, patient lock operator told one boater that he could argue with the sheriff if he wanted too.

Some of these guys running pleasure craft seem to think the world revolves around them and have fits when they don't get their way. I thought the Lock Operator handled it very professionally...while the pleasure craft operator sat there pouting.

While I was listening to this "outburst", it reminded me of the battleship having a verbal exchange, telling a light house to get out of it's way.

Out of the 1000's of boats going through the locks each year...there always has to be one.
