Water temps are up, water clarity is down. What does a guy do that wants to catch some mille lacs walleyes in the worse part of summer? Night fish, night fish, night fish. The best bite during the dog days of summer comes from slip bobber fishing after dark especially the mud flat areas. The best bites come from the "no man land" clam and bug bed areas. But for folks that aren't familiar with those spots, anchor up on any of the major mud flat edges and points. The two south forks of the 8 mile flats are always good this time of year. A few other good spots are the sharks tooth, blue jug and 9 mile. The calmer the better. The night time slip bobber bites can last until 3am or better. If the action slows, keep the anchor down and drag it a few 20-30 yards and reset. This will kick up some bug action on the lake floor and trigger more walleye action. And dont over look those fish that are riding high in the water column.
If anyone wants to try some of the bug and clam bed areas. I can post some coordinate's if there is some interest.
Thanks for the tip Derek! I forget about that night bite, but you are right on. I'm up until 3 am anyway, so I might as well do something productive. Its also a very surreal feeling to be away from all the noise out in the middle of nowhere under the stars and moon. The clam beds sound intriguing, so any more tips on locating those would be nice.

Yesterday, I went and trailered down to the south end and checked out some of my old spots. This was the first time this year I fished the southeast corner of the lake. We managed 4 keeper slots in about 5 hours of corking the rocks. One here, one there kind of bite. Keep moving and look for piles that top out in the 18-20 foot range surrounded by 25+. Jigs and leeches suspended 2-3 feet off bottom got bit.
One cool sighting happened Saturday. I was smallie fishing an area of rocks in about 5 FOW. Lake was dead flat calm, sun right over the top. I had just pulled in another scappy 16 incher when I see a school of eyes move under the boat. This school was about 4-5 fish wide and kept streaming through in a single file kind of order. Probably 200 fish proceeded to slide through in the next 30 seconds. I’m thinking, got to grab the jig/bobber set up and catch one. About 30 seconds after the last walleye trained through, 2 telephone pole size muskies come lumbering through. Coming from the same direction as the eyes and heading out right behind the school. These 2 skis were freaking huge!!! I moved the boat around the area looking for those fish and never saw them again. Funny……the smallies also disappeared!!!
We had quite the light show here last night. Things are starting to settle down. Got one more day here to chase smallies. Thinking of heading over to the west side.
Derek, thanks for those spots! We have had some luck at this time of the year off the SE tip of Hennepin Island out in about 18-21 feet, there is some kind of a hook of a drop off we look for. Will be up there tomorrow night and staying a few days.
The shallow rocks on three mile can also bring some good bobber action in the morning hours with some good wind. Sometimes that bite can last into the afternoon as well..
