Anybody been out?

#695896 - 07/29/08 11:50 AM

I love to fish the Wapsi during these dog days of summer. I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Just wondering if anyone has been out and how they have done. The levels finally look like they should. I'm optimistic, but it's only Tuesday.

I was out Sunday at Central City looking for a biggun smallmouth, but only caught two dinks. The week before I stopped at Quasky and caught a couple of pikers, but no smallies to be had.

The river was a little high on Sunday, about 6" higher than normal summer levels. Not sure how that affected the bite, but I had infinitely better luck on the Northern stretches of the Cedar.

The rivers have definitely changed some with the floods. I caught a nice 17" eye and a 15" smallie last night in the Cedar in places I'd never caught a fish before, but those spots sure looked good now. I hope my Wapsi spots didn't change too much since I last visited. If the rain holds off this week the rivers should be in good shape up here.

The river was dirty and still about a foot high, but there were some fish to be caught even at mid-day. Biggest eye was about 17", smallies were cooperative and the catfish would hit moving plastic so I'm sure if you fished for them they would cooperate. Should be a decent fall, since the fish have had a pretty good break up till now.

Rocky shorlines for smallies should be good early and late in the day with the heat the way it is. Catfish at night should be (ok) until it cools down a bit. The big ones are in deeper water coming to the shallows every few days to feed because its been warm. Catfish don't feed well when its warm in shallow rivers, look for the holes and sit and wait. The end of august and sept. the fish will bite again. I know an old timer who quite running his bank poles three weeks ago because of the heat. He ad I are going to start up again the later part of august after the water cools down and the oxygen levels rise again.

Finally got to go on a fishing run to some of my best spots. What I discovered was most of the spots in my "milk run" have been changed due to all the high water. Most were filled in with sand/rock or deepened so I couldn't wade thru the spot. So back on the learning curve for new locations for my run. My third stop was on the Wapsi and it was a winner. Picked up six smallies 15" to 17"s and a bonus walleye 22.5"s. All caught on a crankbait with my color design that I worked with a lure company in Ark. to paint up for me.

Picking up a few walleyes on the Wapsi..shouldn't be
long before the bite gets real good.
Enjoy it as much as possible.

Seen a couple of smaller walleyes caught today
below the Central city dam.
Water is LOW.

That place is hammered day in and day out. No wonder why they are always small there.
