I was thinking about heading to the Croix next week to try my luck at some rough fish ! I plan on fishing in the Afon state park. Is this a good time to fish the area for rough fish? Also what would be a good choice if bait? When I went before I just used crawlers on a slip rig and I caught some pretty nice redhorse!

I'm not sure about rough fish...but the cats are biting!
A friend of mine went out last night. I'll let you know how he did. He's been using live bullheads, cut sucker and worms with a variety of fish coming to shore.
I'll post tonight how he did last night.

Don't forget to try just above the bouy's at Catfish Bar. There's always plenty of roughies hanging out there.

Don't forget that 2 lines also help the curve of catching more fish!
My personal favorite is crawlers on a bottom slip rig with a number 4 circle hook to ensure a mouth hookup.
I am not sure on the Afton area though, I rarely go south of Stillwater on the croix.

Braink that would be great to hook up with some cats! Is there any size to fish? And are they favoring any bait over the others?
Sauger, Yes I was part of that group.

My buddy landed a 10 lb flathead using bullheads.
Worms, cut sucker, live bullheads and live suckers are the only baits I've ever used...not saying other bait wouldn't work. He's a shore fisherman, fishing out of Afton.
The one time reported state record flathead catfish (60ish lbs) was caught at the catfish bar in Afton. It's on display at the Catfish Saloon in Afton. Yeah, there's some big fish out there.
