Haven't done that for a long time and need to get back to it now that summer has set in.
What kind of areas do you look for? Good slop vs bad slop. Some of those areas seem to go on and on. I am OK (I think) with baits and equipment from reading so it is more of a location thing, depths, current, etc. Thanks for any help.

I have had luck w/ fishing Coontail mats. Flipping a 3/4 oz jig into the "meat" of the mat. There will be about 1 foot between the bottom and the mat where the fish will lay. Several flips to the same mat are necessary for trying to entice a bass to hit. I did well on this tactic in a tournament and got a check for doing so

where are you fishing. I'm pretty familiar with the lakes in and around your area and might be able to help out.

I fish quite a bit of slop and one of the biggest keys for me is holes. Whether it is a hole inside a thick mat or a small indentation in a mat edge. These are mainly spots where the weeds are only a few feet under the surface. I like to pitch plastics into these areas (mainly sinking worms) or run buzz baits over them in the mornings. Another thing i look for are 'clean edges' of weed beds. These are often on points or next to drop offs where the subsurface edge is more like a wall, instead of flats where there are isolated stands of weeds scattered ten foot out from the mat itself. I will often get up next to the mat and cast down the edge of these (spinner baits work great), gradually working out and deeper from the mat itself. This is what works for me, i hope that it helps put a slob in your boat.

Back in my bucketmouth days I would fish several lakes in the Aitkin area. I would find the thickest pads in the lake. I would work the edges first then get right into the thick stuff with a Snag Proof tourney frog or a Moss Boss. Areas where you would never want to throw a bait, is usually where your going to find some quality fish.

Don't hesitate to set down the top water frogs and such and go to SUPER heavy flippin' bait and punch through the mats and pads....
Like mentioned above, a lot of times there is good water under that mat and when you punch through it you'll drop it right on their nose and they'll smoke it.

Dave, mostly fishing Miss River from Guttenberg north. Don't do much with lakes this time of year. The lower end of the pool at Guttenberg has seemingly miles of pads, duckwork and slop/weeds.
Brady, good info. Slop, thanks for the info too. I figured you would hit this one out of the park so to speak. Is that 3/4 oz weight Tungsten or lead? I would think that the N. Pike would make fishing with Tungsten an expensive hobby real quick. Maybe it doesn't happen that often?

My biggest was 5.8 caught on a 12 inch worm in the slop. I wish I had superline back then.. I still have the fish on the wall.. My dad made me do it...

I have had good luck finding clumps and throwing around the edges and then drop a 3/4 oz jig right in the middle of it

BC and I absolutely smoked the bass in the slop this afternoon. We started fishing the pads and duck weed and were catching keepers, but it wasn't until we went onto the heavy mat that we found the big boys. The key tonight was to actually hold your rod tip down and pound your frog through the thick mat to get the vibrations through it and they were blowing through like six plus inches of heavy mat to grab our frogs. Color really didn't matter b/c they couldn't see it anyway. Our best two tonight for our clubber went 7.3lbs and there was plenty more where that came from.
I'll try to post our pics when they get sent to me.

Either one will work but your correct - it does get expensive. I bought 3 frogs before going out today ($25) and two are gone already I'll probably go through another 10 by then end of next weeks BFL
