My friend Jake (JAKOB) and I hit the Rum River yesterday for some canoeing and fishing. We launched in St. Francis and paddled approximately 20 river miles to Anoka. The flow was really low on the first half of the trip but in the deep pools we crushed the fish. We boated about 30 fish, the majority were smallies from 10" to 15". We also had about 6 eyes from 12" to 18" and a couple of hammer handle pike. Jake had a 30"+ pike on but it threw the hook and got away. The second half of the trip was kind of a bummer because we underestimated how long it was going to take so we had to paddle our butts off to get back before dark. Everything was caught on #5 and #7 deep runner raps, color didn't seem to matter much. All in all it was an awesome day on the water and I'll definitely be heading back for another go at it. I'm thinking 5 to 10 miles so I can concentrate more on fishing and less on paddleing! Oh yea, the horseflies up there are absolutely terrible right now. I think I must have 50 bites.
