lake superior walleye fishing

#698267 - 08/06/08 10:04 PM

Well I took my grandpa out this morning for some walleye fishing on lake superior. We launched from Superior wisconsin, and headed down the shore. We had a light west wind so it was a perfect morning. We fished from 5 till 1045. It was perfect timing because a big storm moved in right as we got dont fishing as you can see in the picture. We trolled for a hour and then we finally found them. A gold reef runner deep diver 40 feet back in 35 feet of water was the ticket today. We ended up with 5 walleye, a 24 incher, a 23, and 3 under 20 inches. I also lost a nice salmon right behind the boat, wow do thoes things fight! It was nice to finally get some walleye for the pan since you can only keep one over 20 inches. Hopefully the bigger ones will be biting this weekend! BTW thank you brad and ben for the tips you showed me out on mille lacs, they helped me today!

Congratulations Grant on a successful trip! What's even better is that you got to share it with your Grandpa! Glad to hear that you were able to apply the crankbait/planer board trolling bite on Lake Superior!

You've definitely earned those fish with all those acres to pour through. Congrats. I've heard rumors of some huge fish caught up there every summer by board trollers working outside the harbor.

Ya if you cant be out there every day like me it usually takes 2 hours to find them but then your in business, they move around quite a bit. There are some very nice fish caught out of there, i saw a 34 incher last year. im stil waitimg for the 30 incher!!

Yup, that's the caliber of fish I hear about... and of course my ears are more than a little attentive when I start to hear of 32, 33 and 34 inch fish.

Please, keep us updated if you make it out again. You're on a truely interesting bite.

Ya they are not uncommon. A long as we dont get a east wind i will be out saturday morning, but if its a east wind the waves will be too big for my dads 16 foot boat, and i will be hanging my deer stands. somedays when its calm i take my 14 footer but thoes days are few and far between. I will keep you updated whenever i go out! Some days you cant get anything under 24 inches and somedays all you can catch are 18 and 19 inchers, its kinda weird.

Man... you've got to feel AWFUL small out on Superior in a 14' boat.

My gal's family lives about 5 minutes from the Boy Scout Landing on the St. Louis so I've hit that a fair number of times in the last few years with good results. The big lake keeps calling my name but I haven't been able to get out on the water to give that BIG water trolling a go.

I was at the Two harbors breakwater last weekend and was able to see a few waldos swim past the base of it. Actually I was able to get a couple to follow my cleo by jigging it in front of them. I've taken several off the breakwater over the years during this time of the summer. They are always very nice fish.

Walleyes will make a trek up the shore about as far as Silver Bay, but then the water gets deeper and stays colder and they cruise back along Wisconsin's coast.

The herring were thick a week ago too, but I couldn't get them to hit a spinner. Usually a #2 mepps gold spinner with a plain treble will see them jumping all over it, but not last week. I tried both gold and copper to no avail. I had one trout chase me and another give the bait a pop down deep, but they were not welcoming either. Boaters were getting fish on the humps and doing deep water.

The waldos were right on top of the rocks at the base of the wall....may 25-30 feet.... and would come thru in broken bunches of a dozen or so at a time. They'd roll once in a while and we could see the white on the tail real well. Neat to watch them pass, but would have been neater to catch a couple.

well i got out on superior and was fishing by 615 this morning. it was pretty calm, light ese wind, and 45 degrees. We had a pretty chilly boatride down the shore. I took my dad out today as this was his one day off of work this week and mine also. We started off fishing in 25 fow and nothing was happening so i decided to move deeper, and bam right away we got a 23 incher. In the next 25 minutes we got 2 more all on a td9 hot chub color.

That lure seemed to die as it was 9 am, so i threw out a hot tomalie deep reef runner 40 feet back and picked up two or so more. ARound 930 the lake was a sheat of glass, not a ripple on it, and then the fishing died. And then around 1030 the wind picked up again and so did the fishing as we got 3 more including one lake trout. It was pretty cool we could see sturgeon jumping all morning, with some bigger ones around 4 feet coming out of the water.

BY 11 i had lost two nice fish and was not happy so we were talkin about going, and then the drag on my sg27 screamed out and i knew this was a nice fish. i handed the rod to my dad and he reeled it in to the paner then i took it off and i was fighting the fish. 5 minutes later this 29 incher came up and my dad scooped it up into the net that it barely fit in. It is my biggest walleye so far. it went 9 pounds 3 ounces. We also got fish on a yo zuri crystal minnow.

so we ended up with 8 walleyes and 1 lake trout. We kept 5 for the pan . overall it was a pretty good day!.

ya i also love to fish the loopers, they are fun to catch thru the ice too. i only got 5 this year but i did get one 8 pounder that was a very nice fish. I got my first one in late january haha, i wasnt expectiong to catch any but i didnt have hockey that day so i went out and sure enough i got one. There was a strong west wind and there were a ton of ice bergs floating by. i think i lost 2 bobbers haha.
