Pool 8 Channel Cats R Slow

#698329 - 08/07/08 06:29 AM

I am struggling this year trying to find double digit channel cats. Last night, 8/06/08 was no different. The river stage is just right at 4.99 with a flow of 17,600 but the water temp is dropping again being at 77 degrees.

The skinny waters, being side channels and sloughs, were dead so I moved back out to the main channel. The shad are starting to show up along the tips of wing dams and the channel edge and this is where I did find some action. Nothing worthy of the time and struggle to get the camera out on my own though

The night gave up only 3 channel cats for me, a 22, 23 and 25 inch fish were caught on cut baits all coming off the main channel while drifting.
There are a lot of fiddlers along the wing dams but were did the biggin’s go?

Even with the slow action it is always a good time on the water after the sun goes down. A busy pool 8 by day light turns into a ghost town at night, and everything looks bigger in the dark. After pulling out of the way and watching the second barge methodically make its way past at 10:30am I had enough and headed for the landing. The goose bumps that covered my body in the cool night air were not a good sign for seeing the water temp come up at all in the near future.

Oh well, gotta keep trying…..one of these nights my boat will stumble across the big girls, I hope
Good luck fishing people

Heck, if you're getting goose bumps then that can mean just one thing - - - - ice fishing is just aroung the corner.

Judging by the buckets in the resort, there are some double digit cats coming from P4

Bret, most of the P4 doubles are coming from just behind the wing dams...although I fished a flathead wintering hole a week or so ago and pulled a 15.5 out of there....er..well the FW did.

We have river minnows (what ever they are) and shad starting to show up at the dam in the evening in the numbers of two years ago...sounding like rain after dark. After a goofy spring, I'm thinking it's going to shape up to be an outstanding fall.

Thanks for the info Brian. I think I better start heading back to the North end of the pool

So I'm not the only one who had a disappointing spring? A few years back I was rocking in the high water, catching more cats than ever, but this year bit rocks. Now August (if a month can be a nemesis, mine's been August) is my best month of the year?! I hope you're right and that this bodes well for the fall - haven't had a decent fall in a few years.

I don`t catfish alot but this year the ONLY place I have found decent sized cats is around the dam area. I don`t understand why I have a couple of wing dams that in the past have allways produced some nice cats 8-17lb channels and a few 30 to 38 lb flats. But this year all small 1-3 lbs

I didn't catch a fish in June this year. Usually I get a hundred pound string in June. This year I didn't start seeing the early June pattern until the end of July. Very odd year here.
