for consecutive flatheads without one over 20 pounds?
I think I may be approaching it. I am now in year number 2. I've been leaving the camera home and everything. I am thinking about using one of the 8-10 pounders for bait, see if maybe that will draw in a big one.

Dude, you aren't even close.
Here's how bad it is getting for me. That is a flathead, not a bullhead. I didn't "catch" him, I snagged him (not on purpose). Look at the size of that hook compared to the fish. Yep, that's another monster 16 for me...as in 16 oz....as in a pound.

I don't know that much time without some action, you might be catching the biggest there are to offer for your water?

Yes, a manmade maximun size unfortunatly. There is a HUGE population dropoff around 20 pounds due to overharvest but setline anglers do catch 30's and 40 with some regularity and the DNR has tagged a few 50s.
I think what is happening is that I am getting better at finding flatheads and catching more fish but because there is such a higher percentage of smaller fish I just keep wading through them looking for a big one.
Larry, if not this year, I'll be back next June for sure.

Bigger fish will chase off those young uns. Move your spots.

I’ve heard that from quite a few cat guys, but I'm not buying it.
I’ve caught quite a few large cats in the same spots as the little guys are hanging out, in fact some within a few minutes of each other.
I can see in a predator/prey scenario where the predator is sight feeding then that is a different story.
In general though, I don’t let a few small ones discourage me.
Unless of course 30% of the big ones are being harvested……

Well....They are not being harvested by me
Gotta catch'em first......
Biggest Flat I've caught this year is about 8-10lbs also.
Ditto on the channels...lots of eater's but size-wise it's been poor...
Down here, the river's temp,IHMO,is the culprit...temps in the channel have not been over 80 all summer....earlier in the season it was going up and down(as did the flow) quite a bit and a guy had to hit it when things were just right....Like Matt did
I'm starting to fish our "small river"(anybody got a canoe ) this week.....maybe I'll find a fat one or 2

Thats frustrating for a trophy hunter. How are other guys doing on your water? As you know, flathead fishing is not that hard, mostly time consuming, and some luck can go a long way. You have been catting for quite a few years and I cant imagine youre doing anything wrong. Youre catching alot of fish... they just run small.

keep at it you will get one soon enough if you put enough time in. I went 2 months going 3 times a week this year with nothing not a hit, a run, nothin. Now ive landed 2 fish this week that went 50lb+ so dont get frustrated just keep at it. Ohyeah and you dont need 2lb baits to catch big cats i caught this one on a 5" bullhead

Do not worry; you are not the only guy infected with the small fish disease. I have been out all summer pretty heavily and have caught more fish under 15lb than I have any other year. I do not believe the idea that some spots hold small fish and some hold big fish. I firmly believe that particular locations just hold MORE fish than others, regardless of size (fish), and coincidentally there are ALWAYS more small fish in a river system than bigger ones. Very few fish actually grow to “trophy” size. The fact that the majority of my fish caught in the past 2 months are small, is solely by chance.
Persistence is the only remedy in my opinion. Several small fish is better than no fish. I am not about to throw in the towel - although I think many catters in this area have due to a slower season. Just wait ~10 years, all these 5lbers will be huge!
