After a couple of weeks of really hot weather, it was time to make a fishing trip somewhere, anywhere, we just had to hit the water. After making several calls to friends throughout the state we finally decided to hit Calamus for the third time this summer. Both of our previous trips ended with 20-30 mph winds and no fish.

This time we got a nice weather report that the wind would be 5-10 out of the E-S-E. Not a great wind for Calamus but not too bad. We got to the lake to find several groups fishing just out of Buck Shot. But we headed across to a couple of nice humps that have produced for us in the past.

No luck would come from these points unless you consider 6" perch and drum to be your species of interest. So we went and joined the pack on the other side of the lake. Again, small perch and drum were the specialty of the day with this group, but we did see one small walleye caught and released.

A couple of hours later we had made our way back to the Buck Shot area and still had not connected on any walleyes by live baiting. We broke out the boards and decided to troll the points on the SW side of the lake down to Nunda Scholls and across. About half way down we did connect on a nice fish but lost it on the way to the boat. That SW side of the lake is always tricky trolling because of the extreme drops; but it can be very rewarding at times. We did pick up a couple of small whites when we would get shallow.

At Nunda Scholls we made our way across to the old sandpit area. As we got to about the 17' area we landed our only walleye of the day. It measured only 17" but was a real 'butterball." We worked the area over pretty good but it was the only one for the day.

We spent the rest of the day with a group of gulls about half way up the N shore between Dry Creek and Homestead Knoll. There is a large flat in that area and the gulls and shad stayed there most of the day. Several boats were in the area and were casting and jigging with some success. We continued to troll our shad raps and flicker shads and picked up some whites.

I think three times we had two fish on one lure. An oddity, but it shows how aggressive the little guys are. We ended the day with a nice group of whites for my partner a meal.

The day was not a success if you are wanting to catch a mess of walleyes. But we did get out of the house for a nice day on the water. We caught fish; yet again not the species that we targeted or the size that we would have liked. Sometimes just being with friends is the reason to go fishing.
