Panfish action

#699527 - 08/11/08 09:58 PM

Took my son and his buddy out this afternoon to delevan for some good panfish action. Targeting blue gill again, as we did a couple weeks back, paid off quickly. We barely got the anchor tied off, after searching and finding marks in the 20 to 30 foot depths, and my son yells out that he had one on. Seeing the good rod bend, I teased that he had bottom again, but up came a nice 8.5 inch gill. didn't take long for all of us to get in on the action, and after about 15 gills in the 8 to 9 inch range went into the livewell, we decided to move on to a couple other spots. We marked fish and anchored in two other spots, and proceeded to pull in gills, with four crappie 10to 12 inches in the mix. Waxies and small fatheads produced the gills, and all in the 25 to 30 foot depth range.
If you have any young ones who like to fish, nothing like a fast panfish bite to keep 'em going. The youngsters in my boat didn't want to all it quits, but with visions of having to clean a few dozen fish, we practiced catch and release for the last hour, and called it a day at 6 pm. got home to fillet 38 gills....could of had another 3 dozen. Good times for sure.

Sounds like a blast Z-man, Delevan sports some nice sized gills
Hear any word on Lulu Lake? That always seemed to turn on around this time of year for suspended bulls also!

There are times I miss the Southeast part of the state.

You mean the Lulu that connects with Eagle Spring lake? haven't heard, but did try to get over to Lulu with my son earlier this year, in my 12 ft. winter boat.....motor was acting up, so we never made it. Haven't been on that one, but have heard of the bull gills.

Yep, that's the one. There are monster gills in that little lake. The boat ride through the cut between the 2 lakes is always enjoyable. Keep your eyes pealed for fish darting for cover. There always seems to be a pair of swans that don't like to get out of the way either.

Keep in mind if you do get there the limit is 10.

Out on the Big D again yesterday afternoon into evening with 3 youngsters, looking for some panny action to keep them occupied. After searching around fora 30 minutes or so, in various areas along south shore to get a little protection from the wind, we found the pattern. The bigger fish were laying deeper, in 30 to 35 fow, and preferred waxies and crawler bits. Kept 40 gills in the 7.5 to 9 inch range for a fish fry for the fishing crew tonight. Threw back about 20 more, mostly smaller ones. Shallower water produced the smaller fish.
If it wasn't for hunger, these guys would have kept going all night, saying over and over how much fun it was. Called it quits at 7 pm, to get back home and get those young bellies fed.
Cool evening when we quit.....I feel walleye in the air....will be hanging up the panny rods, and bring out the eye gear for river fishing soon.
