Mississippi river deep cats........pool 11

#700751 - 08/16/08 05:22 PM

Took my 8 year old boy Jack out for some deep water cats this morning. Water temps still around 77. What a beautiful day out there! Everyone else who owns a boat in Grant county thought so too as the traffic was crazy.

Jack and I set up in a few different locations with deep wood, anywhere between 25-30ft. Using cut sucker and gills provided some good action until around noon then the bite started slowing down.
Jacks first cat was this new personal best channel coming in at 11 lbs. For an 8 yr.old he sure did a great job of man handling this beast.

In another deep location this 15 lber.fell to a cut sucker, the largest kitty for me this year. Alot of 4-6lb. cat came in from the deeps today making the insane boat traffic a little more tolerable.

Great fish Jeff and Jack. I need to get out and try and figure out the cats on the big river, thats one fish I've never tried for much.

BK.........Jack did have his very first flat on a live gill yesterday, this behemoth that about pulled his pole out of the holder

Had 2 other runs that fell short, otherwise the majority came off of cut

OK,picture this Jay........Dad waited until the week-end traffic was gone Sun.night, pristine and like glass. Set up on all of the areas Jack and I had the action at on Sat with the crazy boat traffic.
We used live gills, cut bait and even Sonnys. Drifted cut gills in every location possible, shallow, med.deep water.... hit the channel breaks too, again, the water was glass, beautiful night......ONE CAT

Sometimes I really believe that waves and commotion can keep the bait stirred up and nervous keeping the bite alive. Seen this with walleyes alot too with warm water temps. Strange I know but there's something to it. All that said, I still would rather take my chances without boat traffic and waves. As Bret often says.....good therapy!

Nothing you could have done different. This year has been very inconsistent for some reason.

Every time I think I have found the Channel Cats (I'm not talking the fiddlers being caught by the dozens right now) they are gone or tight lipped the next day

Oh well......here is to therapy

Say that again Bret........Had a spot pool 7 last Saturday not really big fish 4 to 8 lbs but consistent. Out this past Saturday could not buy a bite if my life depended on it.

That must have been the same spot Bret and I tried Saturday....

We hit at least 6 spots, with only one small channel and a couple bites. It was s....l.....o......w.........
