Here is a quick multispecies report with combined info form Jason Bongers and Scott Peters that have been busy guiding out Hunter’s Point Resort on Mille Lacs.
Muskies
On a trip one day last week their boat caught and released five muskies. The fished caught were 37, 40, 43, 47 and 50.5 inches! The muskie bite has really started to pick up in the last week. Reports out of Hunter’s Point Resort have been good. Multiple fish days are common in the last week. Gene Miller also has been catching fish this week as well. The water temp has been between 72.5 and 75 degrees. As the water warms up a bit more and the month goes on, the bite should get even better! I'll let Scott pipe in on the hot baits.
Walleyes
The walleyes have been a little slow this past week during the day. Those catching fish are fishing the sand or gravel transitions with a slip bobber and leech or trolling lead core or deep diving cranks on planner boards. The key is to follow the bait fish, and there is plenty, that you will see on your locators and look for those tell tale arcs of hungry walleyes nearby. The evening bite has been pretty good, especially for eaters. As the sun is setting it has been best to be in 10-14 feet of water using a leech on a slip bobber. A plain hook has been best on calmer outings, while a light jig seems to be better with a little wind. Move anchor positions until you locate the active fish, many of which should be slot fish!
Smallmouth Bass
The smallies have absolutly been the savior during the day. Calm days have made it much easier to fish shallow water, light weight, finesse techniques. Look for active fish to be on the rocks off the points or the rock reefs on the east side. Bobbers with a live or Gulp Alive leech have been very effective. The Gulp Alive minnows and leeches on light jigs are working as well. Also the try Gulp 4 inch Turtle Back Worm or the 5 inch Shaky Worm. Fish up to 22 inches have been boated! Rumor has George's grandson got a beauty!
