Pool 2 8-20

#701693 - 08/20/08 09:41 PM

In spite of the winds I made it out onto Pool 2 this evening. It was really howling which made boat control easier and presentation harder. The wind was so much stronger than what little current is flowing that I could use the trolling motor to hover in place above wing dams or along rip rap. On the other hand I tried to throw a jig but it was pretty tough to keep a feel for where the jig was unless I was throwing dead down wind. Crank baits were the order of the day.

I made an interesting discovery... I have a limit Creek LCS69MLF. The "Smoothie". It's been.....modified.....Ok I foolishly stepped on the tip and broke about 2 inches off. I mounted a new tip, it's still a great rod; it's just a little stiff for finese presentations. But man does it work great for throwing a light crankbait like the Berkley! Accurate, long distance, and excellent sensitivity.

I never found a fish on a wingdam or rock pile. Every thing I found was on shoreline rip rap. Smallies, White Bass, and Sheephead. One of the Sheepies was pretty hefty and had me going for a while.

Oh....twice today I had a Cruiser barreling along up the channel slow down as they passed me. Very nice touch and appreciated by the guy in the little aluminum boat!

Thanks for the update.
Glad to hear that some of the cruisers can think about others.

We were out yesterday morning and managed a couple walleye - 27" and a 22" all others where sheeps and white bass. The wingdams were pretty quiet but the eddies and slack water seemed to produce the fish. The current is real slow right now. Thought about using live bait along the face of the dam to see if we can spur on some more fish. Any thoughts?

I did think about it. Last week Mike W mentioned using a jig with a piece of crawler. The sons of one of the guys I work with have been fishing from shore with crawlers and they've been doing pretty well, including a Carp that had to be 40 inches long. Mainly they're catching a ton of Smallies.
