State record caught using a barbie Pole, would not let me post the site, but here is the story
ELKIN, N.C. — David Hayes' granddaughter just ask him to hold her Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom.
He did. And seconds later he landed the state record channel catfish at 21 pounds, 1 ounce.
Alyssa's father had bought the pink Barbie fishing rod for Christmas and she had caught a few bluegill before her grandfather hauled in the catfish.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported the catch Aug. 5 in eastern Wilkes County has been certified as a record by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Hayes and his granddaughter have been fishing in the pond behind his house since she was big enough to hold a pole.
Hayes says his granddaughter worried he would break her rod. He landed the 21-pound fish on a 6-pound test line. It was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

I think the guy is 7 foot 5 inches and weighs 450 pounds, that's why you don't see it...

"Alyssa celebrated with a juice drink. Hayes got a soft drink and a pack of crackers. They hadn't had a chance to eat supper."
They seemed to be wasting away, needed to get refueled

Seams pretty legit to me on length/girth = weight.
32" is fairly short for a 20lb channel cat but 22" girth is a chunky girth measurement for a fish that long as well.
A 34/35" x 19" channel cat runs in that 19-20lb range in our neck of the woods.
What I would have figured was North Carolina's channel catfish record would have been considerably larger, thats whats surprising to me. Minnesota's channel cat record is nearly twice that size.

I thought the same thing Hanson. Seems awefully small for the growing season there. maybe a line class record? who cares. I must've broken their state record about a hundred times.

Channels get bigger the further north you go. As flats and blues get bigger the further south you go.

If that is the case the world record should come from Alaska. Wisconsin record is 44lbs. Closest I've been able to come is 27. I've lost a few that I thought were bigger than 27 but that is catfishing. Don't send a boy when targeting these fish.
Channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, are North America's most numerous catfish species. They are also the most fished types of catfish, with approximately 8 million anglers in the USA targeting them per year. A member of the Ictalurus genus of American catfishes, channel catfish have a top-end size of approximately 40-50 pounds (18-23 kg). The world record channel catfish weighed 58 pounds and was caught in 1964 in the Lake Marion, South Carolina.[1] Realistically, a channel catfish over 20 pounds (9 kg) is a spectacular specimen

I would bet there are some hogs in Alaska. Alaska doesn't have the fishing preasure that South Carolina or Wisconsin or Minnesota has. Also there are alot of remote non fished rivers that could very possibly hold a new world record.

The farther north you go the shorter the growing season. However, the fish live longer in their northern range. I think there are no channel cats in Alaska. You are correct though I think down in SC they probably keep everyone they catch and it might be hard to get one that big. As far as pressure goes, I catfish a lot and rarely ever see another rig doing it and I have one of the best channel cat fisheries I've ever seen in my backyard.
Distribution
Channel catfish are native to North America east of the Rockies from southern Canada, south into northeastern Mexico, and east of the Appalachians with the exception of much of the coastal plain north of Florida. The species has been widely introduced in other areas as far west as California. Today channel catfish range throughout Texas, however, it is believed that the species was not native to the upper Rio Grande and Pecos basins.
They have the same range as the Sasquach. I know Farm is really interested in them.

The size of the fish for that area made me scratch my head...not the size of the fish pictured and I'm bad a judging channels.
What really has me wondering is the "3" year old. Even if she's 3 and going to be 4 tomorrow...she's a healthy specimen.
