Has anyone tried the Cabela's XML Ti Spinning Rods

#702955 - 08/26/08 07:34 PM

Yesterday I purchased a XMLTiS664-1 6'6" 1 piece, general purpose rod for pitching jigs at wingdams. It is medium power with nickel-titanium alloy recoil eyes. The reel seat torques down and really grabs onto the reel tight.

Does anyone have one? I don't know much about all this new fangled stuff they put into these things. The sales man said that the eyes are indestructable and the rod has a "25 year limited warranty". I do know that the frames on my glasses are titanium, I can fold them in half and they go right back the way they were.

The rod is on sale for $100 and regular price is $180. I most likely will not be on the river until Sunday and am itching to know if the salesman lead me in the right direction.

I've not used that rod but the titanium eyes, if they're similar to the ones used on the Croix rods, are pretty darn nice for a couple reasons. 1 - you can't break them. 2 - they reduce the weight of the rod making it feel incredibly sensitive in the hand.

Let us know how that rod works for you.

I recently got to handle one of those rods in a 7ft model. It is sitting in my shop as the customer donated it to a worthy cause when he bought his new Elite. My first impression of the rod was favorable and should work just fine for ya.You will be seeing alot more Titanium guide rods in the very near future.

Its an excellent rod, I think you'll like it. No, I think you'll love it. I've had one too many guides break, and those titanium guides are excellent. And its tough to beat the warranty. I recently had to replace an older XML, and I had no receipt. Cabela's simply asked if I was the original owner, and that was it. I walked out with a brand new rod. Hard to beat that!

I sure will.

My first thought was the same, I just needed someone else openion. Like James said it is very light partially due to the eyes. I am just not use to the 64 million modulus graphite, it is hard to believe it is as strong as it is being so lite.

You are correct on Cabela's warranty, I have returned a lot of stuff. Just last year I returned two trolling motors but the third is the perfect one for me and my boat.

The other rods I have are great for verticle jigging or slip bobbering but for pitching to wing-dams they just don't give enough feedback. With our fast current I thought I might step up to 8 pound test on one of my spools. I am going to get this pitching down and at least start catching some rough fish.

Thanks a lot guys.

I've got one that I use all the time.

Can't tell ya the model right off without going out to the garage, but it's a 7 or 7 1/2' medium model that's general purpose: lindying, pitching jigs, crankin.

When I first got it...I hated it. It sounded cheap (you could hear the guides) when it was under the load of a fish. Didn't seem like I could cast very well with it either.

How things have changed.....now it's my top rod and I use it very frequently. Never thought a rod needed "broken in", but this one sure did. Doesn't make any sounds anymore, and I just love it. Hopefully while selling it to you they took a guide and bent it all the way down to the rod blank- it bounces right back up. I wouldn't call them indestructable, but they are close. Treat it well and it'll definitely return the favor.

I have the titanium recoil guides on my G Loomis Walleye Series GLX. I love them- they are light, but has anyone fished with them in the cold? Like February and March- the guides loose their recoil ability and become very limp and bendable. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem as well.

I fished with a Croix version in March (temps in the 20 - 40 degree range) and didn't notice any change on that rod.

The guides are made by REC. The only downside to them is they do tend to sing with braided line. You also should realize that they are metal and over time they can be grooved by line like all metal guides did years ago. The light weight is a bonus in increasing the sensitivity. Keep in mind that every bit of weight added to a blank reduces its sensitivity to some degree - so weight reduction in the guides is good.

The marketing of these rods as well as some of the Bass Pro rods is a little misleading as the blank would contain some 64 million modulus fibers but a blank made entirely of it would be too brittle to use for a fishing rod. That said - such fibers may increase the sensitivity without having the entire blank made up of them. If it meets your needs - the price is good and the warranty is great. Enjoy it and keep reporting how the guides are lasting for you. Good luck with your fishing, Chuckles

When mine were singing, I was using mono. Sufix I think. I switched to Fireline on this rod, and it makes no noise now. But I think it was already 'broken in' before I switched line. Weird.

I went to the Missouri river today with a friend. I had a pretty good idea where I wanted to try the rod. For those of you that don't know, the section of the river I have been fishing the flow has been running 3.25 mph land speed on the inside bends and 4.75 mph on the outside bends. I found an area that was running 1.2 mph the last time I was out and that is where I headed. I pitched a 1/4 oz jig with a Gulp crawler. The water on the face of the dam was too swift to work the jig down to the rocks but once I got about 10 feet in front of the base of the dam It finally got down to the bottom. I was and am still totally surprised that I was actually able to feel the rather coarse sand.

As for the guides making any sound I could not hear anything but that is not saying much since I am about 1/2 deaf and with the water running so fast it makes a little noise. My boat is pretty loud also.

I am really impressed with this rod.

If you're fishing with this rod and you're liking it and gaining confidence in it, you're winning more than half the battle right there. It took me a long time to get confidence in this rod at all, but now that I have total confidence in it, it's great. Good luck with it, and I hope it improves your catch rate!

I bought this rod with the prodigy reel as a combo a few years ago and like it very much. I used a friends St Crouix a couple of weeks ago and was also impress with that. My next rod will probably be a St Crouix just for the sake of trying something different, but i will for sure post here for some good advice first. This site rocks. Rogan
