Torsion Spring

#703140 - 08/27/08 10:13 AM

It's one of those days ... Torsion spring on the garage door snapped this morning and I'm looking for someone to replace it. Any one out there have any recommendations? I live in Inver Grove Heights.

although I do my own, here is a good site that explains the differences between springs, and how making a bit more of an investment up-front will yield much longer lasting spring life.

Consider dumping the springs all together and going with a screw drive instead. Best thing I did after replacing the springs twice in one year. This guy was great, came on the weekend within an hour: J D's Door Service

Czech,
Are you saying your garage door has NO springs at all, and just uses a screw-drive opener to lift it? What size/type of door do you have? I'd like to see the opener that would lift my 300#+ door without any kind of spring assist.

They both have Springs either torsion springs or linear expansion springs.

I used to have springs on either side, now I have a worm screw in the center. Not sure if there are other springs now that you brought it up, I'll czech when I get home and post again. All I know is I haven't had a problem since. The door is just a standard two car foam core, it is far from 300#'s as I can easiy lift it manually.

I know that I will NEVER mess with a torsion spring on a door EVER, after seeing someone get all the meat riped off his forearm by one,
It was like he put his arm in a running lawnmower.

Ok you guys, my bad! At least I admit it I guess. Mine DOES have springs on either side of the center of the top door rail, and is CHAIN driven. Jeez, could I screw (pun intended!) up any worse? Anyways, if I recall correctly (and don't trust my memory at this point), I had cables and springs and stuff on the outside edges of the door, not the center. Hell I don't know what I'm talking about, but the door has worked fine since I did whatever ever I did via JD above, and it didn't before then. Ok, I feel better now, apologies for my ignorance!
