Is it just me or is the baseball trade deadline a joke? I thought the deadline was July 31 but people keep getting traded every day. Why do they have one if it really does not mean anything? The Red Sox traded for Mark Kotsay today. It just seems like teams that are willing to pay big $$$$ for anyone can just sign guys whenever they want. I think that Sunday is the day they have to submit the post-season roster, why don't they just use this day and stop the unecessary trade dealine stuff.
July 31st date has to do with a player clearing waivers. These players like Kotsay, Guardado, etc who are getting traded now are players that would likely pass through waivers since no team out of contention would want to sign the player for the remainder of a dead season.
You would not trade a Morneau or Ortiz at this time since teams would love to have the long term rights to these guys who are locked into long term deals.

The earlier deadline "JULY 31" means those players can play in the post season anything after that like the Red Sox's move those players won't be eligible for post season play..hence the word Deadline!

Actually, it is August 31st that a player must be on the 25 man roster to be eligible for post-season play. That is why the Sept. 1 call-ups are not eligible. An exception would be to replace an injured player. So these trades are to get people for the rest of the year AND the post season.
