Pool 2 Carp

#703855 - 08/29/08 07:40 PM

This guy ate a crankbait! I mean he SLAMMED it like a Smallie! When he headed up river I thought I had a big Walleye on for sure. Tremendous fight too, great fun. Oh and he wasn't foul hooked, the front set of trebles was inside it's mouth. One other interesting thing to note was that I was using a medium light spinning rod, the Limit Creek "Smoothie". I guess that rod will handle big Walleyes if it can handle a big Carp. 28 inches long, I didn't get a girth so I don't have any idea what it weighed.

Today also ressulted in a bunch of nice Sheephead as well as a few Smallies.

Was the crank bait contacting the bottom, because carp love crayfish.

Yup. The riprap slopes down to about 5 feet deep and then drops off again to 12 feet. I was bouncing the crankbait along that 5 foot ledge when the carp hit.

What I'd like to do is figure out how to get these carp to hit a fly. I'm seeing them along this rip rap so I could probably drop a nymph in front of them isf I was careful (and lucky).

One of the coolest things I discovered while fishing is a small orange/brown jig crawled slowly across the bottom would catch carp. I haven't tried it much since, but it was fun.

Nice...you know, I actually read something in the Press or the Star Tribune about a guy flyfishing the river somewhere in the cities with nymphs and whatnot and catching all kinds of carp, sheephead and stuff.

You know that feeling in your stomach when you get that first quick glimpse of a big fish way down in the water? Awesome.
