Exercise proper catch and release this fall!!!

#703898 - 08/30/08 07:21 AM

As the ground cover starts to change colors and the birch trees start to turn a golden yellow it is always a sign that walleyes are starting to move to fall patterns. With the outstanding summer of walleye fishing we have experienced this fall is very likely going to be lights out. Although I've eluded to this in other posts I feel it is never discussed enough. Proper catch and release of slot fish is the key to the future of sport angling. Make it a point in your boat this year to organize yourself for efficient catch, photo and releasing of fish. Have your camera out and ready to go. No need searching for 10 minutes for your camera. The fish won't make it. Do not drop the fish into the bottom of your boat as the fish will likely hurt itself. Be very careful around the fish gills. Carefully net the fish remove the hook and snap a picture. Take a quick measurment being careful as often times when you lay that fish on your ruler it gets pretty anxious and likes to give you a nice gill plate cut. Hold the fish in the water upright by the back of the tail. No need to pump it!!! Let the fish regain the needed energy to make it back to the bottom. The fish will let you know when it is ready as it will swim out of your grasp. It may take 2 seconds and it may take 5 minutes. Don't rip out hooks from fishes guts. That will definately kill the fish, and I see it almost DAILY. If your techniques are gut hooking fish change them. Also if your fishing deep water reel very slow as the pressure change from deep to shallow kills many fish. I believe it is all of our responsibilities to help preserve these big fish in this fishery. It is quite possible that the 27 inch walleye you've just caught has been caught and released a number of times, so take it upon yourself to continue the cycle. Keep up the great work and pass it on your fishing depends on it one way or another. See you on the water!!!

This is just the kind of information that needs to get out.
Its to bad that the fishing publications rarely ever print this kind of stuff. It should be second nature to most but its not. It is one place where the trout fishermen and women are ahead of the curve.
Thanks and keep up the good work

Welcome Montucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trout are a legendary fish that are only available to those who choose to spend their disposable income on expensive worthless gear that only looks good when sitting in some wine bar in (enter fancy ski town name here) instead of actually fishing. Rumor has it that the working class can catch the sneaky trout with nothing more than a snoopy kids rod and a can of corn. Never caught one my self but I hear that nasty fish eating ducks taste better. You know the ones that your well behaved lab would spit out and not return.

Bass Tourneys in Fall

#711646 - 10/01/08 10:00 PM

This is a topic covered in the current (Oct/Nov 2008) issue of In Fisherman magazine in the article Deep Smallmouths and Barotrauma.

I was shocked to read that a Rainy Lake fall bass tourney resulted in 12.8% fatalities according to an Ontario MNR study. And even worse, 60% of the bass tested showed signs of barotrauma. Who knows how many of those died later?

Barotrauma is caused by taking bass from deep water and then holding them in a live well. They apparently can handle fast pressure changes (they do jump on their own when hooked on the bottom in deep water) as long as they can return to deep water in a short time.

Big bass show more signs of barotrauma than smaller specimens. And of course it is the big ones that are kept for weigh-ins. Releasing bass miles from their wintering grounds must also cause stress. They must either expend much needed energy swimming back to their favorite hump or try to find a new spot to spend the winter. Again that will take its toll.

Captain John glad to see that you are here. You won't get any nonsense from me about the article unlike some people who sneak about in the dark corners of the web fishing world, dispensing beat downs with the CAP LOCKS on.
here is the web link to the university study in question.

Thanks for posting that link!

Tried to find that link. Now everybody can read the facts.

I enjoy going to the weigh-ins at the summer tourneys. According the In-Fisherman article, summer tourneys cause far less damage to the fishery since most fish caught then come from shallow water. I hope the guys running the fall tourney on Rainy take note of the study and change the time for that tournament.
