Baptism River

#705615 - 09/07/08 09:08 PM

The FW and I are heading up to Silver Bay for a few days. I'll be taking a fly rod with me and will probably hit the Baptism or maybe the Split Rock.

I have no idea what may be in the river or what may work best....so any suggestions would be appreciated. I'll be taking everything from nymphs to drys to big ugly streamers.

If nothing else this should be an interesting experince!

TIA, Rootski

I love that area! It is so beautiful! Never fished that stretch..I like the Lester and Sucker closer to Duluth.
Let us know how you do!

The Splitrock will have pinks around. Yarn balls are your best best. The Baptisn could have a few Kings yet....they are no longer stocked but show some natural reproduction.

Everything on the north shore is contingent on rainfall getting rivers moving, slow and low flows will have your action pretty much confined to the shore at river mouths.

Low light casting at rivers mouths can get you a laker occasionally. A very good option is to drive back to Two Harbors and fish the breakwater....cast little cleos, krokodile lures, Mepps Syclops'. 6 to 8 pound line on a lighter, longer rod will get the job done.

Re-read your regs carefully. Rivers and within 100 feet of their mouths require a single rod and a single hook, live bait or lure. The breakwater allows two rods and no restrictions on hooks....I usually cast a lure and soak a crawler under a slip float at 8-10 feet.

September is the best month up there for the open water season. I'll be coming home from a 12 dayer in the same general area as you are arrivng. Good fishing!

Same to you CT! We'll have to compare notes after it's all over. Thanks for the help.
