I recently order a new Canon 40D camera along with a new Canon 24-105 4.0 I.S. lense and I hadn't had much luck with lightning shots so I decided to play around with some nighttime exposure shots. these shots are from around 15 minutes to around and 2 hours. I thought you would like to check them out.
This shot was about a hour and you can see how the camera lense picks up any light available... my yard light is what lights up the pasture behind the house.

This shot I took straight up towards the skies with my pine trees in the backyard as a border. What I like about this is you don't know what you get till you slide off the cable release and your photo appears on the LCD screen of your camera.

While I was trying to get a shot of the Big Dipper I had a neighbor drive by so I hurried to setup the tripod to get a shot as he drove down the road. I think it's so cool that it picks up the headlight and tail lights, but where did the truck go????

My question for Ken is do you think the D50 is worth the extra$$$? I have been leaning towards a D40 especially since the price has come down some recently and being I'm nowhere near a pro with a camera I was wondering if the difference would be worth the Money. Thanks.
I have not gone over to the "dark side " as of yet.. what would I do with all my Canons? F-1's, AE-1's, Ft's, Al's, and the like..they would be lonely..
let me know if you are in the area ( La Crosse, and LaCresent )and want to do a photo shoot some time.. I would be happy to shoot with you..
well that is an excellent question... when it comes to photo gear it does make a BIG difference how BIG your budget is.. the 40D is a magnificant camera... Im not sure what the price difference is.. but if its a few hundred $ it might well make sense for a lot of people to save the #.. afterall.. you need lenses too....
Another element to give you some really cool long exposure shots is you flash. On some cameras you can sysc on the second curtain. In the case of the truck, the flash would freeze the motion of the truck and the exposure time would have given you the background effects. I'll have to look for some of my old photos of the barges on the river and trains! Very cool work!

another fun thing.. but might get you in trouble.. is shining a million candle spot light on the passing car as it whisks by.... with the wrong person who knows what the result of that shot will be... best you setup to have someone go by...
