First Bass tournament (in many years)

#705650 - 09/07/08 11:51 PM

I fished in the early RedMan Bass tournaments near Prarie Du Chein in the early 1970s...Now 35 years later a good frien Herb Samme', persuaded me to come out of retirement...Conditions were very very tough... late summer transition coupled with severe cold front and heavy cold rains. Fishing a reservior that I hadn't fished but a few times.
But I knew from my other guide trips that the Bass were on deep points, mid lake humps amd weedlines. I worked finesse tubes most of the day and it paid off.

I won the 2008 UPTRA Bass tournament Biggest Bass category yesterday… ($350 cash) with this 5lb 1oz beauty! My partner Herb drew a blank all day… We finished 11th out of 36 teams. She took a 4” tube on the edge of a deep water cabbage patch. Quite a battle on 6# test…but the 7’ blue St Croix “Tube” rod brought her to the net! I had a great time and plan on fishing a few more next season!

Sorry I did not get to take any pics...these are from Herbs wifes camera.

You might say that John... I enjoyed the challenge! I quickly remembered the other "things" that happen too. Right after we netted my big fish another boat zoomed in about 25 yds from us (tourney violation) and screwed up the rest of the honey hole... Some guys must never spend more than 2 mins on a spot the the high pitch roar of a 250 Verado cranking by again!
But knowing the seasonal patterns and doing ones homework most times will put you in the game.
