Okoboji Bass

#706121 - 09/09/08 10:03 AM

Last weekend was a little cool and/or wet for my girlfriend on the water but I got a little time in between sight seeing. The lake looks to be down a foot or 2 from this time last year and although we kept busy with both large and smallmouth there wasn't much for size. Most shore line wood I've fished in the past was nearly dry, the docks seemed to hold mostly small fish, and I didn't find the big'uns ganged up along the outside weed line ether.

I'm headed back in a couple weeks to try again anybody know where they are hide'n? Think a couple weeks of cool weather will move the big smallies shallow?

I saw several decent bass up shallow around the docks casting for muskies. Got smacked twice tonight by bass to on a 9" muskie bait but never got them hooked. Eariler this year I got a suicidal 12" largie on a Cowgirl, maybe you need to upsize LOL

Funny you should say that because I throw some topwater baits over there most guys think are for muskie. When the BIG smallies are hungry they'll hit'em better than any of the little baits. Of the good ones I got last weekend most came on big baits, was really slow though. Not sure we'd have had one limit in the 3days we played around on the water. Had enough action from small pike and bass under 15" to keep things interesting but didn't figure out where the big'uns were ganged up. Sounds like some are scattered here and there but the schools must still be deep. Maybe a couple weeks of cool weather will move'em up?

We have caught our fair share of big smallies and 6-8 pound largies while chucking muskie baits. Picked up a 21" eye couple weeks ago on the same crankbait I got a 48" muskie on a few days earlier. You ever get a ski to hit one of those topwaters? Stop and say hello if you see us out and about, normaly in a 17' Tracker Targa. I'm the one with the Llungen hat on.

Had a musky hit a big woodchoper along the flat on the south of gull one time. Also lost a big tube bait, right at the boat, in the same area another time. That one looked like he was 3foot long in the water. Just took one bit and kept right on going. With 10pound line I don't think he even knew he had a hook.

The flat area on the south side of gull is the only place I've had any musky hit. The area usually has several musky guys scattered from there to Eagle and along the ridge to Pocohontas. Must hold a few cause it draws some traffic. Any certian stretch you seem to bump into the bigger bass?

Moved lots off and on between Gull and Hiawatha up on the flat. Look for Fredora along Manhatten that could hold a few fair fish.We have picked up 2 19"+ smallies off Hiawatha in the past and 1 off the North Bay this year. That suicidal bass I got on a cowgirl was caught off the bar south of Eagle. South side of Millers holds alot of bass as does the rock reef in Millers. My best smallie bites always been on the East end of the reef. All the huge bass I see under the ice in the winters been in Millers. I have seen a couple green carp that should push 10#. I'm sure we'll pick up a few this weekend, I'll let you know where.
