Lake Bemidji?

#706174 - 09/09/08 11:46 AM

My son goes to BSU and I might head up there this weekend to meet up and do some fishing. Anyone have tactics for Lake Bemidji - I have never fished the area at all. Thanks in advance.

Lake Bemidji is one of my favorite lakes to fish but I have not been on the water there in 2 years now. There is a State Part at the north end and I have used the ramps at the west/norhtwest side and the one at the South end. The ramp at the South end is in shallow water for a hundred yards or so. The lake can get rolling with a good North wind.

There are a lot of good weed lines and several rock piles and bars to fish on this lake so there are a lot of options. Most of my fishing has been on the northern 2/3 of the lake above a large bar that divides the lake, I think this was called Diamond Bar. If I remember correctly, Diamond Bar should connect up with a point right off the college property or just north and then run East/Northeast across the lake.

I have done well fishing for walleye and seen plenty of big muskie but never did boat any. I hear that bass and panfish are decent and I have caught plenty of perch while rigging for eyes. The pencil reeds along the East shore has also been a good multi species location.

Good luck.

I forgot to mention that there are a couple of decent baitshops in town, I used to go to the Bluewater bait shop, always good bait and good advice.

Right now the lake is pretty much going on most of the bars out there. Jig and minnows have done pretty well as have pulling cranks along the weed edges. The water temps have dropped down into the lower 60's this week which will move most of the fish along the shoreline drop off's. As it gets colder a lot of the fish will move towards the moving water. If your son does not have a boat there is some great wader fishing to be had at the in-let later in the season.

If your son is a hunter of fisherman he will LOVE it up here. There are many lakes and LOTS of hunting land to enjoy. I moved up here to go to school as well and just never left.

We fished 4 hours in the rain on Saturday afternoon. 2 hours casting the east reeds got one muskie up and one bass. 2 hours casting and trolling Raps got 2 jumbo perch. Very wet, but a good afternoon none the less.

It was not the most pleasant day to be out there thats for sure. We spent a few hours out there as well in the rain. We picked up a few here and there but it was not the greatest day of fishing at all. It will get better all the time.
