I am looking to pick up a casting rod for trolling/casting cranks for walleye. I need a two piece rod for travel purposes. Crankbaits will typically be run in 8-12' of water. I plan on using this rod with a Shimano Calais 200APV.
I had thought about the Cabela's XMLTi casting rods in 7'(2 piece) length, medium power.
Any suggestions would be very welcome!!!

Dumb question...Will you cast or troll more with it? Also, is a telescoping rod an option or possibilty for you? Not sure what your max length is.
FYI,St Croix does offer the premier in a 66mf,66mhf,and a 70 Hf in 2 piece casting as another option for ya.Good luck!

It's my personal opinion that a good crankbait rod will always have a moderate to a moderate fast taper on the blank. On a fast action rod I believe that you have a tendency to want to pull that bait away from the fish when you feel the initial strike. While I'm not a big troller I would have to believe that the same thing can occur. I tend to think that this problem is over-exaggerated with any of your no stretch superlines.
Loomis makes a crankbait series rod, so does St. Croix ( nice rod, but I wish the taper was somewhat faster than a pure moderate action rod ), Kistler, and Setyr all make very good crankbait rod offerings as well. Just my 02c.

I agree Mack... However the 2 piece factor does have its limitations, albeit I am not up to speed of the 2 piece availabilty of the brands you mentioned.

I am planning on using it for primarily trolling. I would say the max length I could have a single piece be is 6'. Seven other fisherman's rods have to fit in the rental van, and it needs to make it in my car as well. Thanks for the replies so far!

Too bad a 6"6' wouldnt work for you...the Tidemaster 6'6" in med moderate action would be a very versatile time tested and proven rod for ya that would be great for pulling 3 way rigs as well.

Is this the rod you are looking at? XMLTIC702-2 If it is I think you will be happy with it. With a 25 year limited warranty if you have a problem with it after 25 years technology will make it obsolete. The titanium nickel guides are the cats meow of guides. They are light, flexible, and durable.
A few weeks ago I purchased a spinning rod and wanted to know if I was miss-lead and posted this question. Has anyone tried the Cabela's XML Ti Spinning Rods
Good luck with your choice.
