Wissota update, 9.14.08

#707434 - 09/15/08 08:40 AM

Am I the only guy fishing the backyard gem these days?

Got out for the afternoon yesterday to check on the development of the fall bite. It's not on yet, but there are signs of general improvement.

We put ~ 15 walleyes into the boat, all but one by pulling cranks on lead in 20-26 fow in the main lake. A wide variety of patterns were working, including straight and jointed baits, with larger baits like SR8s and SR9s being slightly more effective. Speeds in the low 2's seemed to be the best.

Pitching bait in the yellow river arm was slow but provided a decent mixed bag of smallies, hand-sized gills and a random walleye. Crawlers still preferred over minnows....another sign that the fall bite is not yet upon us.

Water temps in the system range from ~ 65 near the Jim Falls dam to ~ 68 on the windward side of the lake. Algae is pretty managable. Flow in the river was significant yesterday with all the rain to our north, and the water in the chip was definitely dirty.

I'll just add to your post Jason since I finally got an evening to head out. Last night wasn't the best as far as weather conditions go, but did manage about 7 eyes total in about 3 hours of fishing! We were fishing just out in front of the Yellow using ball head jigs and minnows. Finding the right depth was key...about 14'! Jay and I did manage our personal best for cats...the pictures were taken on my cell phone in the rain so they are not the best!

Spent time on the Chippewa River the last three day's with my bro and his son, we managed walleye some smally's and a few pans along with a couple big carp. Amen on the crawlers over minnow's, almost ten to one for us. Should just keep getting better, all in all it was a nice opener for the fall fishing season (personally I enjoy having the lake to myself)

I fished that lake near hwy K near where I deer hunt and saw a bunch of big sturgeon jump. Do people fish those in the fall like the St Croix?

Great report Jason, when the girls & I return from San Diego we'll have to make a trip over there.

Another week-10 days and she should be going strong.

The fall bite kicked in last yaer when main lake temps were ~ 66 and persisted as the temps dropped into the 50s. We're not quite to 66 yet but will be soon. Adjust trolling speeds accordingly!

Also, look for the crawler bite to transition to minnows. That happened last year as temps in the Chip began to flirt with 60.

Quick update...

Made it out after work for a couple of hours yesterday.

Temps holding steady or even creeping up a tick or two with the warm September sun shining on the lake.

Not much change in fish activity, except that I noted more fish showing themselves in "traditional" fall locations. I didn't see all that many over the weekend.

Fish still popping cranks on lead in the lake and crawlers on light jigs in the tribs.
