I played a little hooky today and got out of work early and headed for Pool 2. A little windy from the south and water temp was 67 degrees.
I took the fly rod along today thinking I might be able to fool one of those big Carp I always see along the rip rap. Whatever they were eating apparently looks a lot different than what I was throwing...they just ignored me. On the other hand I had a 24 inch Northern smack my #12 Wooly Bugger , and later I caught a bunch of little Smallmouth. It was fun to stretch out a fly line today!
I hit a few wingdams, threw hair jigs and plastics, the usual routine. A few White Bass was all I could find.
I decided to cover some ground by trolling crankbaits. A few more White Bass and then I had something....something very big.....hit that crankbait. I had the drag too tight and as I was attempting to ease up a little, the hooks just came out. Three or four big head shakes and it was over. I'll be wondering about that one for a long time. For you Rainey River veterans, it felt "Sturgeon Like". Oh well, back to trolling and I soon had another solid hit. With the drag set right this time I just kept steady pressure on and took my time. This fish was just over 26 inches. Not a "big" Walleye especially for Pool 2 but for a "Walleye Challenged" guy like me, it looked pretty good! Her side was all torn up and bleeding before I got her into the boat so I have no idea what happened. Could she have gotten wrapped up in the line ?
Lots of big hooks on the depth finder around 20 feet down, I wonder what they are?
