9/19 Croix

Got on the water around 6:30am and motored to a spot I never fished and a spot I havent fished in years in search of some "River Rat" winning eye's. The day started off good with low winds and good bite. first fish of the day was a short sauger with three missed bites and another short sauger. My next spot landed me a 17 1/2 in eye so I got out of there in hopes of preserving the bite in that area till next weekend. Off to my usual fishing holes. I ended the day with 2 short saugers 2 short walleyes a smallmouth and the 17 1/2 in eye and some wind burn.I am going to pay for getting up so early and going fishing as I have to work a 12 tonight 3-3 I sure hope it is not that windy next weekend.

TEAM REDNECK how'd you guys end the day?

Jesse, We got spanked! We stumbled into some fair sized sunnies and played with them for awhile but other than them and the smallies we stunk. My old spots were dead and I remembered why I don't fish the St. Croix much---it fishes more like a lake than a river. The wind messed with us but we should have got fish but didn't. About half way through the morning I told the boy that I thought we should pass on next weekend and he said "I was hoping you were going to say that". We're letting you have all our fish spots buddy--we have none---so go out and win that thing! It was a nice day to be on the water though.

I was able to make out today as well... didn't really do much walleye fishing though. I launched around 8:30, pulled cranks for about an hour and then had a time-out from 9:30 to noon (waiting for my wife to join me - she got delayed... ).

We then headed over to a well-known sturgeon spot and tried our hands at catching a few of those. Even though this spot was somewhat out of the main force of the winds, it was still enough to give the anchors a thorough work out. I never did get them stuck well enough to keep us completely stationary so we ended up swinging a bit. We fished there from about noon 'til about 3 pm and ended up with two small sturgeon, a big carp-sucker, and the obligate sheephead. The first sturgeon hit pretty soon after I finally got everything rigged up and taped in at 29". My wife brought that one in and I think she was surprised by the fight given by the fish... The second was came about an hour later and I had the pleasure of reeling that one in - it taped out at 31".

I was using circle hooks and a 3/4 oz slipweight. With as much as the boat was still moving, I probably should have gone heavier and chucked it out away from the boat... oh well, we still caught a few fish and few rays!

Rich,

I think the wind played a major factor in fishing last friday. I ended up getting blown off the water. the further upstream I was the windier it got (seemed like anyways).

King185,

Good to see you got into some sturgeon. I've never fished for them but I would like to give it a try sometime. I am suprised that your pictures didnt get any grief for the bridge in the background
King are you fishing the River Rat tourney?

I should mention that I photo-shopped in that background... that's not really where I was fishing

I was hoping to get to that one this year but it looks like I'm going to have visitors this weekend... I may make it out on the water on Saturday but I doubt I'll enter the River Rat...
