Leave your Crappie rod at home!!

#709028 - 09/20/08 06:51 AM

Thats because these slabbers scoff at the little wimpy stuff! 2lb test?? NOPE! Trust me these 15 inch plus Crappies will leave you crying in the bottom of the boat saying "Rainydaze told me so!" or "Wow that felt kind of like a pike!!" Nope!! Light walleye gear will suit you very well on these big pannies while also coming in pretty handy when that big walleye gets tempted.

We dealt with close to a 30 degree drop in temperature today from yesterday, and the Crappies responded accordingly. SLOW!!!! Had them graphed all over, but had to work pretty hard for some fish. We ended up with 24 crappies between my 2 customers and myself managing to pick off a few active fish from each pod. Also landed a nice fat 26 inch walleye. Tomorrow temps will moderate a bit, and I expect the bite will pick back up a bit. We're chasing some walleyes tomorrow!! H20's soaked deep!

Bring your Crappie rod !!

#711643 - 10/01/08 09:52 PM

I'll keep on using my wimpy UL rod. During my lifetime I have landed my personal best smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, crappie, brown trout, rainbow trout, and MUSKY on my little 5-footer with 4 lb line. I know a couple 10-pound walleyes also fell to that rod last year but not my biggest.

Now I don't try throwing musky jerk baits with it. I match the rod to the lure. 1/16 crappie jig and I use the UL. Rapala X-Rap and I use a beefier spinning rod. Somedays the big ones just won't hit bigger lures so I break out the little marabou jigs. Got a 39-inch pike on one of those two weeks ago - thought I was marking bass!

I understand where you are coming from Chris and let me tell ya….them are some nice looking fish Your statement holds very true for the novice fishing person also, excitement can loose a pig like them specks in a hurry

I still like my light stuff for ice fishing. This piggy was takin’ off Mille Lacs 2lb line spooled on a Pfluger President Micro Spinning reel seated on the St. Croix UL Ice Legend. The fight was awesome and yes….lucky to get her head up the 8 inch hole with a thickness all of 28inches.
Not that I would make it a practice if I was on lakes such as Rainy or Mille Lacs daily I might step up to 3lb

As allways, great pictures and info Mr. Daze
