Upper Pool 3 First Timer

#709462 - 09/22/08 07:31 PM

Launched early in Prescott last wknd. Fished dams and shorelines with jigs and cranks until about 11am. After getting pounded by the wakes from cigar shaped boats with names like terminator, dominator, alligator, and other intimidating names ending with "ator", we decided to troll some sloughs. We picked up two shorts on the channel and one short in the sloughs. Lots of small minnow clouds around. Water temp was almost 70F. Hoping cooler temps will soon send the drug smuggling boats into storage and bring the fish chewing.

You couldn't be more right! We did have a huge shiner and shad hatch this year. When it cools down, hang on! There will be a fantastic bite!

Jason, If you can get out on P-3 during the week Mon- Thurs MOST of the tuna fleet is docked and fishing is better or very early till noon on Fri-Sun. Tuck nailed it. It's a great place to be in the fall... Greg R

separate question for you guys.....
when pitchin cranks....do you prefer floating or suspended baits. i never even gave it much thought until recently. seems like you might be able to back a floater out of the rocks easier...but the crank and stop with the suspended "RSSR" might trigger strikes a normal floater wouldn't.

thoughts?

thanks

you hit the nail right on the head, I like floaters simply because the rock gods will give you a few of them back.

For rip rap shorelines with gradual breaks and slow flow I like RSSR's in #7...retrieve and stop...retrieve and stop...

For wingies I like Floaters like Salmo Hornets that dive in a hurry, but can often float out when snagged. Bomber 4 and 6A's and DT 4-6's also, but they don't float well.

When trolling depths 10 foot and less (Which you should be targeting in Fall) a #5 straight and jointed Shad Rap is hard to beat.

I would use all the above in a day on the water.

Don't forget or overlook the venerable Blade Baits sold at Evert's and B-Fish-N Tackle! I have gained more and more confidence fishing with these!

Trolling cranks is something I sure don't know much about. I always liked pitchin so much better....seemed more fun. But I realize trolling cranks and catchin fish is probably actually more fun than pitchin and not catching anything. When you look for a trolling run...what sorts of adjacent or corresponding structure should you look for on the river? Flats? Sloughs? I've seen lots of articles/videos on pitching various baits but not many on trolling tactics.

Great question!

I find that anytime you have an area with long accessible current seams, you have the makings for a good trolling run. I have trolling runs I utilize in sloughs, long runs along rip-rap, and deep to shallow current breaks along sand flats. Off the top of my head, I can think of 10 such areas that I consider my "Milk Run" on Pool 3. Each have one thing in common, and that is a clearly definable current seam. Utilizing a serpentine pattern I will move in and out, up and down breaks until I get bit. Use your graph and mark areas where you get bit. If there is one fish there, chances are there are more. And most likely there for a reason.

Make sure that whatever presentation or area you are probing, that you are in close proximity to the bottom. River fish relating to current seams will more often than not be relating to bottom structure. If a #5 isn't getting you there...go with a #7. If a #7 doesn't do it...go lead with a #5.
