On Saturday my lab ate a minnow that was still on the hook. It was a #6 hook so pretty small, with about 8 to 10 inches of line. Not showing any signs of problems just wondering if anyone else has ever had this experience. I am hoping she will just pass it with no problem. Any thought or concerns out there?
probably be ok.. but Id maybe call a vet if you have one you can trust.... I have a vet I can trust to tell me to bring the dog in for an exam. I trust them to get the bill up to around $500 somehow no matter WHAT I bring them in for.... now THATS trust! so... I wouldnt call them.. you need to call a vet that cares about animals enough to leave the profit motive at the door.... and thankfully there are many of them...
On Saturday morning, my buddies lab got hold of a catfish stink bait rig when we were getting ready to head out duck hunting. Whiskerkev missed one when he cleaned out his boat. Trebble lodged in the back of the dogs throat. Kevin managed to dislodge the hook, but not before the dog put the clamps on his finger pretty good. Dog was fine, Kevin's finger survived, but will be short a nail in a bit. A piece of towel and some electrical tape got him through the hunt. Kevin came out worse than the dog.
Since your dog swallowed the hook, I would be a little more concerned. I would be surprised if it passed the hook without it getting stuck somewhere, but you never know.
I'm not a vet and I'm not telling you what to do with your dog. But, many years back shore fishing for cats using stink bait, a buddy's Chow grabbed a hook with stink bait and swallowed. Tried to bulldog her down, but it was too late. The line was slack, which helped. Because of the line in her mouth, she kept swallowing. We cut the line and she swallowed that too.
Felt sick, we both did. Thinking for sure the dog was done and no $$$$ to take her to the vet. Family dog.
Called the vet, told him what happened. He said as long as she was acting normal and the hook wasn't pulled, not too worry. He said the stomach acid would eat the line/hook and it would be passed. The dog lived a long life and survived.
-------------------- Wow, that was really scary and if you don't mind me saying, if that don't work, your breath will certainly get the job done.
I was hoping/thinking that the stomach acid would disolve the hook. She has been acting normal, eating, playing etc. I would assume if there is a problem I would see it in her demeanor. Thanks for the feedback I hope all is is well.
Keep a close watch on the dog. My friends spaniel has swallowed 2 hooks while steelhead fishing and had line draging out of her mouth. Both times she required surgery as the string got pulled and set the hook puncturing her stomache and intestine. His dog was running around with line dragging for a while both times. As were were wading in the river and dog was cruising the shoreline. Both time sshe was foaming at the mouth from trying to puke up the hook. Vet said it is possible for it to pass if hook was not set. Never bring a dog steelhead fishing. Good luck
I spoke to my vet yesterday and he said that most dogs will pass the hook as long as it does not get caught on something. He appeared more worried about the line than the hook. She still appears to be her normal self so hopefully everything is good. The vet suggested to keep an eye on her but as long as her behavior, eating, drinking, pooping etc. most likely things are fine.
Well my dog had a present for me on our walk last night. She passed the hook and the line! I was relieved to see it and will need to make sure in the future that whoever is fishing with me is careful with their hook and minnow.
Don't get turned off by the grin but it made me think. Many years ago my little boy came home with his buddy and his buddy said, "Matt swallowed a ball bearing". What, "how big was it? Pretty big. Well we took Matt to the doc. He ex-rayed it and said he has to pass this in seven days otherwise we have to go into get it out. I said, " how would I know"? He said, "you will have to check out each bowl movement". So I inspected for four days and then on the fourth day Matt came running up to me and said, "Daddy my ball bearing is out"! I said, "how do you know"? He said,"because when I went pooh it went kerplunk"! Yes, there it was as black as a bowling ball. We still have it in a jewlery box! Just had to share this. By the way my Matt is in the U.S. Navy and doing our country proud. His 8th year! God Bless him! Remember kerplunk!
