Waking up Saturday morning to an air temp of 34 degrees made me get moving in a hurry, gotta love the feeling of winter coming. Makes a guy want to be the first one out there On the ride to the landing the windows were cracked enjoying the smells of a cool fall air. With a cold air temp and warmer water temp a pea soup fog was created. You know the kind, when you turn on a spot light things just turn white, but the boat was going in the water at 6am anyways. There were 2 other boats waiting for a sign of clearing but it was evident that was not going to happen anytime soon. With caution, and a guy calling me nuts, I proceeded for the main channel taking my time following the shoreline looking for a land mark I normally use letting me know the area I like to cross the channel, while using a hand held GPS to guide me into an area that could safely be trolled without the worries of any big boats sneaking up on me. The feeling in such a fog and small boat is humbling to say the least but a great experience keeping cool head with mind control (Believing in yourself). It was a great feeling of accomplishment using the GPS and knowledge of my where about too end up spot on
Set up for trolling, the first track made on the GPS was just off shore while watching my bearing to keep a straight heading. This made it possible to troll the area 30-40yards out without being able to see the shore line but staying parallel to the first track putting me in the strike zone. Sounds like work doesn’t it And all there was to show for it was a 15.5 and a 16inch eye before light, but with that said, the feeling of self satisfaction was right up there and fun was in the making
After light and still with a heavy fog the fish being caught were becoming much smaller. Many 10-13 inch saugers were trying to eat a #7 and #11 floating rapala being pulled using a 3-way rig, it looks funny when a small fish like this is hooked with a bait at least half its own size Only one more keeper came to the boat after sunup and before it was time for me to head out at 10:30am. Everything was caught using orange/gold. This trip the fish didn’t seem to mind if the bait was being pulled up stream or down stream.
There are a lot of small fish using the channel edge but with the dropping temps every trip shows good signs of things to come. The surface temp was at 61 degrees with a slow flow at 11,000. Tail waters and necked down areas creating a little more current are were most my time has been spent. Wing dam tips on the outside bends seem to have a little more flow over the top. No fast action for keeper fish yet but we will stay after em
Hope you like the fog pictures….The pic with the rod does not do the fog justice. I am however pointed at a shoreline not 40 yards away. The next 2 pics are well into the morning with the fog moving up by the dam. About the time they finally released the Bass tournament boats.
Good luck fishing people
