I was out on 14 for just a couple hours before the lightning ran me off Sunday. The fish were going before the storm with 4 nice walleyes and 1 short coming to the boat. The fall plastic bite has started ! Ringworms were the hot bait. I wish I could have fished longer because when I found them they were aggressive. The water temp was in the low 60's. It is getting closer to prime time everyday!
There is some bait in the areas the fish are , but there is not much for young shad in the pool this year from what I have seen. The dams have 8 to 10 ft in front of them. Last year we had a bumper crop of shad and shiners and the birds were everywhere . This year I have not seen much bird activity or stripers working bait. It should make for a good cold water bite with a shortage of bait.
I fished a lot of areas over the weekend, fishing many wings and a whole lot of "new" spots, just out having fun. We put fish in the boat on a few new spots, and did well on wing dams. Only one or two fish per dam on the ones we hit, except for one dam where we picked up a 24, 19 and 18"er. We got our fish on hairjigs, plastics and 1/2 crawlers.
We found success by changing up between the presentations frequently, and not spending a lot of time looking for fish on a dam that did not produce quite quickly.
We caught fish everywhere from the wingdams north of Fulton all the way down to Port Byron. It's only gonna get better from now till ice up. I can't wait. Nothin' like the feel of a plastic getting SLAMMED by a hungry 'eye!
Glad you made it out John. I wish I could have fished longer Sun. I didn't get very far before the weather turned bad. I will be out Sunday maybe I'll see you out there.
