Duluth / Superior opportunities - next weekend

#713438 - 10/10/08 01:28 PM

I will be in the Duluth / Superior area next weekend (Oct. 16 - 19) and wondered if anyone knew of some good shore opportunities going on. I will not be able to bring the boat on this trip and I will have a 12-year old that would love to catch a trout or salmon.

I have fished off the breakwall but no luck in the past. I have also fished the French and other area rivers/streams but always seems to be there a week or two late or early.

Any help on locations and/or tactics would be appreciated.

If you wan't little trout you could just get some worms and fish the lester river. I have caught some pike on the bay side of park point just after you cross the lift bridge. Casting spoons in front of the lester/french could get some action. Remember though lake trout is closed.

I'd just go to Two Harbors and cast the breakwater. Spinners were hot only three weeks ago and salmon were on the hook end. The fish were high in the water column.

Thanks for the tips. I will pack a few things and see what happens. I'll try to post a report next week when I get back.

i have seen people off the lester almost every morning, we have had alot of rain lately and the rivers are flowing. There should be fish by the mouths. try pumpin up a crawler with air on a 4 foot leader with a chain weight and cast out as far as you can and let it sit. I perfer to cast spoons but i havent done very good this year. A couple lakers but that season is closed now. There should be some salmon and loopers around.

Thanks for the tip about the Lester.

Two questions: Are there any closed seasons in that area I should be aware of other than lakers?

Also, have any of you guys tried casting "Zip lure" style baits up there in place of spoons and spinners? Just a thought.

Thanks again

lake trout is the only one closed i believe. yeah people do pretty good casting bombers from shore, but only on certain days. you cant cast them as far and you need to fling yout lures out as far as possible.

I agree with Grant on lure choice. Distance really ups the odds in your favor. You could try floating a stick out to sea by getting it in a good flow and feeding out line and then do a slow retrieve after you put out 100-150 yards. I did that off the Stewart one morning a couple falls ago and found a willing looper...putzy fishing tho.

an orange or pink bomber usually works the best. as far as spoons chartruse, pink, blue/silver and hammered will tend to work best. i like a 9 to 10 , sometimes 12 foot rod that has plenty of whip to get it out there but enough backbone to fight the fish.
