Pex tubing

#713626 - 10/11/08 08:17 PM

I have recently purchased a new home that has a 30x50 shop. . I want to use infloor heat in the main shop. The main shop will be 30x38 with the rest being walled off for cold storage. Anyone know how much tubing I will need, or how to figure it out. I haven't done the research yet. A close estimate would work.

I would really recommend a Hot Dawg gas heater instead. In floor tubing needs to be "on" all the time. It takes a long time to heat up and is slow to cool down.
Don't buy the cheap Menard tubing. Buy a quality pex tubing w/oxygen barrier.

I would think if you looked at Wersbos web site or one of the other manu. sites you may find a square footage calculator. We dont deal with infloor heating systems. Put one in about 10 years ago for a friend. Make sure and install the tubing on top of the insulation. Not under it. You would think this is a no brainer but I heard and see it done under it many times. You space the tubing along the out side walls at 6"s for the 1st 2 or three rows. Then its a 1' after that. Dont run the tubing under any toilets as it will melt the wax rings. Thats what I remember off the top of my head.

Give me a call if you want some help with getting the tubing or layout of it. My father just retired and lives about 10 miles north of Melmo. He always seems to be looking for small jobs to help out on. He has also done a lot more of this type of work than me.

I'm trying to keep run cost in mind also. I could run the radiat at off peak rates and was going to add a wood stove for extra heat when needed. A heater like that would be nice, but propane is the only option and who knows where that will end up for cost.

the basic rule is 1ft of tubing per 1square ft with no runs longer than 300ft so 30x38=1140 i would put down 1200ft of tubing in 4 loops of 300' hope this helps. Terry

Terry's right on the money here. Then ALWAYS start your OUTSIDE runs with the SUPPLY, then work toward the center.
