Concrete Countertops

#713825 - 10/13/08 09:27 AM

Has anyone done these on there own? Just wondering about possible cost and ease of install. I was just watching a show that said they cost twice what granite is, but can't see how that could be.

Matt Grow has worked with these. Shoot him a PM.

My neighbor did one this past year. He was a little upset with his buddy (that does it for a living) when he got the quote from him. So, he decided to tackle the tops on his own. Sure setting the forms and pouring it was easy. It was the 12 - 14 different sandings it took to complete it when the concrete hardened. He had to do 8 or so different wet sandings before he could even seal the top, and then it was another 4-6 sanding after that. It is very time consuming. But, it looks kick-a** when it's done. The other problem is the weight of the tops, you can only go so big with it, and you have to make sure it is completely supported or it can snap in two (or more)

Since I have made this post, my wife has shot down the idea. I would still like to hear what anyone has to say though.

I would not tackel this project on your own. Hire a professional. To become better educated of the process check out www.concretenetwork.com. They will have tutorials about concrete countertops.

I did my own concrete countertops 2 years ago when I built my house. I did 1-3/4" thick solid concrete. [black] They turned out amazing, but it was a lot of work. The materials were cheap. If I had to do it again, I would. But I would not spend near as much time sanding as I did the first time. A good sealer will cover most of the imperfections.
