Upper/Lower Mission This Week

#713868 - 10/13/08 11:09 AM

Looking for a little input. Taking a 4 day weekend this week to spend time with friends on Upper Mission near Brainerd. I have never fished the lake, or any other in the area, so I am looking for some ideas. Planning on mixing up a little time in the woods with fishing.

Is Mission worth the time or should I trailer to Gull, Pelican, etc. (Bass, Walleyes)?

Don't really need anyone's spots, just an idea if it is worth getting the boat wet. Also, where is the nearest baitshop to Upper Mission?

Thanks,

It's a good bass and walleye lake. There are two landings if you need them, the one on upper sometimes gets pretty shallow if the lake level is down. I have not fished it this year but have caught a lot of decent bass out of it. There is a little bar on the South end of the upper lake that I've heard produces walleyes.

Good luck! HAve fun!

Dan, I grew up fishing missions lakes and still get over there once and a while. My grandparents have a trailer on upper and I spent all my summers fishing mission. The bass fishing is awsome. Dont be afraid to fish the deep water just off the weedlines. Sharper the brake the better. Jig with small chubs are killer if you dont mind using live bait. Plastic worms on a jig was always my go-to for artificial. Both lakes have great number, but upper has the size I think. As for walleyes, upper was the only place I fished them or caught them. Size was from 16" all the way up too 29" with lots in the 24-26" range. Always used lindy/leech or jig shinner. Got some fish on shad raps at sunset and after dark. Gull is always good for walleyes, fall is great time to drownd a redtail on a jig or lindy. Dont be afraid to try plastics. A Lindy thumpin grub on a jig will get some fish too. Good Luck

I fished a bass club tournament on the Mission Lakes on Oct 4, 2008. BP Tourny HQ I really liked the lakes although I didn't have the biggest bag of fish. We and pretty much no one else in the club had any luck on the lower lake for anything but Pike. Lots of fish were caught in the Reeds and deep weedlines. I don't think very many fish were caught off of the weed flats.
