Credit Reports

With all the news regarding loan practices tightening up, I'm thinking about checking my credit score for the first time ever.
The couple of sites I've run into will give you a "free" credit report but if you don't cancel within 7-9 days, you get charged $14.95/month for the service. I don't know if $14.95/month is a good price or not but annually that's almost $180.
Anyone have a better and/or more affordable method to check and monitor one's credit score?
Thanks!!!!

There are actual free sites to get this info from. I would check with Bob Bowman for advise in this arena.

Cougar-
This site has the answers and in the first paragraph there is a link for all three reports. Its law the major three each provide one free per year when requested. Link:: Federal Trade Commission

Cougar, I think this is the site I used a couple months ago.
Free Annual Credit Report
When I did it though, I screwed up and didn't select the free annual link on the Equifax main page. I got my introductory report but also inadvertantly signed up for their service. It took me longer to cancel than it did to get signed up. Just make sure your signing up for the free annual report and not free trial period that requires you to cancel or you'll get charged the 15.00 per month.

I think the song actually goes FEE credit report.com cause when I went to that site there was nothing free about it.

Agreed. Free credit report .com asks for a credit card number when you sign up. It states you won't be charged if you cancel within 7 days, otherwise it is $14.95/month.
I don't think I'm going to act monthly on my report, quarterly maybe. Keep the ideas coming, I appreciate it.

The report is free.........if you want to know your score, then you have to pay. Unless you know the value of the score, it won't mean much to you. Run the free reports (3) and you can pretty much tell if there is a problem. The thing to look is debt that you are not aware of.

Ralph has it right. The feds require the three reporting agencies to give you a free credit report once a year. You can go to the site Ralph put up and get all three or go directly to each of the individual sites (Equifax, Experian, or Transunion) and request a credit report.

I just ran my three. They will try to get you to pay to see a score, but you can say no and see the reports for free. No credit card # required.
I could care less about the score. I know approximately what our scores are from applying for a mortgage last year.

The credit report is free. Isn't the $14.95 for credit monitoring? So if there is any activity on your credit report, you are informed. It doesn’t stop someone from opening a new account, but you are informed of it so you can do something about it. I don’t use the Experian service for this. I use this which I got through Wells Fargo. It monitors my credit and I also get a free credit report every quarter for a fee.
You don’t have to go as far as getting the credit monitoring but I would recommend everybody check over their reports at least once a year. Look at the entire report, not just your debt. Several years ago I decided what the heck and got a free copy of my credit report. Well I was looking over the inquiry section and there was one company that I don’t recall having my credit pulled from. A long story short, we found that my wife’s ex (a mortgage broker) had pulled my credit several times. How? Well we found that he pulled my wife’s credit something like 15 times to find her address (which by the way the police decided was not a violation of his restraining order?? He breaks federal laws but somehow doesn’t violate a restraining order ). Once he had her address (which was also mine), he pulled my credit based on my name and address. He didn’t need my SS number. He just entered zeros. So just because you think you are safe because your SS number is safe, think again(unless they have changed the law in the last 5 years). Pretty secure system.
End of the story was he got fired (after enough complaints from us - I guess the company wasn’t too concerned about following the fair Credit Reporting Act, otherwise he would have been fired instantly. ) and some lawyers got involved. Of course since mortgage folks are not license like a stock broker needs to be (that could be a whole other conversation about why the heck they don’t need to have a license??) he got hired pretty much the next day. So now I have to monitor my credit for the rest of my life to make sure this slime doesn’t decide to do it again or something worse. Not to mentioned the loaded handgun next to my bed and German Shepherd patrolling the house just in case he decides to come and investigate that address he got off the credit report.
I found an easy way to get my credit score. Just do a little business with Mr. Bowman!

I believe with the credit score you will be charged. Only credit check is free. There is a one time charge for a credit score believe. You are allowed free credit report from all 3 reporting companies once a year. For more info, visit this website http://www.ftc.gov/freereports
Follow the links on that page to the free credit report.
We were just discussing this in my information ethics class this week. Be careful of going through the company itself. They issue free checks as well, but its more of a scam type deal to figure out who you are and what you have been doing, more of an information gathering from you. Second look out for all the junk mail you will get. Make you read each page and unselect check marks you don't want before moving on. I have done the 3 checks before and the information from each will be a bit different, and accurate. Some will require more work, such as phone in for confirmation, etc.

Walk into your Bank or Credit Union and get one. They will be more then happy to help you
The online credit reports I don't care for. They mail them out to you, which is not where I want my credit report to be sitting, in the mail box A lot of fraud starts with mail and to me this is not a good idea.
They best deal in town is to got right in to where ever it is that you bank, sit down with someone and have them go over it with you. You get to keep the credit report and best of all, YOU walk out the door with it in your hand
