Dear Fellow IDO and Mille Lacs Fans!
First and foremost, we welcome the opportunity to be a part of the IDO family. We look forward and welcome the opportunity to meet many of you!
Although to this point, we've been pretty quiet on the site, we intend to be very active in the future regarding every aspect what's happening on mighty Mille Lacs and the Red Door. From current fishing reports and relative details, to current weather and ice/lake conditions, we will do our best to keep you all up to speed on the world around The Red Door!
As the winter ice season fast approaches, our new cabin project is progressing as planned. To say the least, the landscape here at The Red Door will be quite different heading into 2009. Our 8 new cabins will be completed and ready for the open water season, no doubt! We have also added a new year 'round shower house in the fish house park as well. Bigger and better stuff at The Red Door!
Of course, the talk around the north shore is "when will the lake freeze?" And "will the fish bite?" The answer-- "who really knows!" But we are hopeful, based on the long range forecast being right, we will have walking/4 wheeler ice by December 10th. Let's hope we can get good ice before a big snow such as was the case last year when we got 3 to 5 inches of good ice and then 14 inches of snow on it. That ain't good! And the bite? As usual, early ice should be pretty good in low light times. And we can only hope the perch bite will be a good one in '09 as we get moved out to the deeper fishy haunts.
So IDO Mille Lacs fans.....again, THANK YOU for allowing us to be part of your internet family. Please know, we welcome any of your questions, concerns, ideas and just plain chewin' the fat about Mille Lacs and The Red Door.
Keep a tight line.....
The Red Door on the north shore of mighty Mille Lacs
Ps. We at The Red Door, as we have said, appreciate the opportunity to be a
part of the IDO family--no doubt. But we also realize this is a message
board open to anonymous users. We understand that and respect the message
board concept. And that said, we at The Red Door will reply to anyone who
posts on IDO, who has any questions, concerns, ideas or the like, regarding
Mille Lacs and or The Red Door. But we will ONLY do so if the posting comes
from a registered user that signs the post with a full name that includes
contact info etc. Simply, we have no intentions of getting into debates or
the like, especially with someone we do not know. We will be upfront,
factual and do all we can to be a very big plus to fans of mighty Mille
Lacs. Please call us directly if you do not wish to use IDO to address us in any form or fashion under these guidelines. 'Nuff said......only this one time.

The ice trucks have plows and chains on them! The rental houses are getting some TLC. Things are definately poised for full bore ahead the week between Christmas and New Years. The ice is still not thick enough for any travel with vehicles larger than ATV's.
The forecast is for the "lakes area" to get "a foot of snow or more" by this coming Monday. (hope they are wrong!)Winds of 20-30 mph. are suppose to accompany the snow. So it ain't gonna be pretty the last part of this weekend. And the biggest cold blast of the young winter is due in late Monday and Tuesday. We'll need that to have a shot at thicker ice anytime soon. So the ice making will slow a bit but actually will be set up for an average good winter. Anytime we can drive SAFELY on or before the Christmas/New Years week is great!
We had a few fishermen out of The Red Door today! And the reports were ranging from "2 walleyes per person" to "we definately got a good meal!" One pair of fishermen caught several but all were "too big".
Another load of knotty pine landed next to another new cabin today. They're getting there.
So such is life around The Red Door.

The latest snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow has been scaled back(hope they're right). Instead of the 1-1.5 ft. in the forecast last night--it reads "SNOW IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE ACROSS THE REGION LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE OVERNIGHT. ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BY EARLY SUNDAY. THE BRUNT OF THE STORM IS EXPECTED SUNDAY MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON. SNOW... HEAVY AT TIMES... WILL COMBINE WITH NORTHEAST WINDS OF 20 TO 30MPH AND LOCAL GUSTS NEAR 35MPH. ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 3 TO 6 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE TOMORROW. THIS WILL CREATE VERY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. TRAVEL ALONG HIGHWAY 210 FROM STAPLES TO BRAINERD TO MCGREGOR WILL BE IMPACTED SIGNIFICANTLY. ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES WILL MODERATE SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT AS THE STORM APPROACHES... BE AWARE THAT MUCH COLDER AIR WILL BLAST THE REGION SUNDAY AFTERNOON. BE PREPARED FOR THE CHANGES AND SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THE NECESSITY OF TRAVEL."
Looks like maybe 6-9" now? Not good but we can live with that versus 12" to 18"!

And the forecast(Garrison area) changes yet another time! Now it has a few more inches in it again-since the last forecast early today. Seems like this is as hard to predict as the fishing.
"SNOW IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE ACROSS THE REGION LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE OVERNIGHT. ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BY EARLY SUNDAY. THE BRUNT OF THE STORM IS EXPECTED SUNDAY MORNING AND SUNDAY AFTERNOON. SNOW... HEAVY AT TIMES... WILL COMBINE WITH NORTHEAST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH AND LOCAL GUSTS NEAR 35 MPH. ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 9 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE TOMORROW... ESPECIALLY IN THE BRAINERD AREA. As it starts getting daylight in the swamp, we'll start digging out. Looks like we got about 8 inches of snow but the drifting makes it even bigger. The drifts are already getting hard with the sub-zero temps. For the time being, 4 wheelers on the ice might have a tough time with the drifts. It will be a day or two before we can get a clear look at how things are on the main lake. Some slush might become an issue, especially along shore where the heavier snow drifting/piles will weight things down.
Fishing reports from the weekend are hard to come by! Very few of the anglers that passed through The Red Door over the weekend stopped in at the end of their day to report the catches. The reports we did get were "spotty". One pair got 9 walleyes (5 keepers) and a handful of perch as another pair of guys got next to nothing. That seemed to be the norm. Some had luck, some did not. So, it seems they are willing to bite IF you find'em and cook the right meal for them. It's still not getting tested well as most areas have not been fished too hard yet. It's early!
Again, the drifting is deep so be prepared if you plan on venturing out on the big lake.

Tuesday, December 15th update:
The Red Door plow trucks ventured out onto the ice for the first time today. We have an active crack about 400 yds. from shore in the ten foot of water area. So the trucks plowed the rough ice areas and cleared the shore drifting, as far out as the crack. The ice is hovering around 12 inches or a hair less. The plowing will allow 3 big slushy areas to freeze and heal up. Then maybe a big bridge can be shoved across the crack soon. Right now the ATV bridge is the only one out there. NO RUSH!
If you don't think driving on ice, especially fast, creates a "wave" under the ice--think again. The ice along the shoreline today had about 6-10 inches of water on it for about the first 10 yds. from the bank. As a plow truck--200 yds. or more was blasting toward shore widening out the road, the water on the ice next to the bank looked like a boat wake! The "wave" under the ice--created by a truck 200 yds. away, was creating the water on TOP of the ice to slosh around as if a boat were being beached. That was driving on 12 inches. THAT was an up close and personal example! Not enough ice yet!
The first fishermen (locals) ventured out today since the blizzard. The 4 wheelers struggled in the drifts but made it pulling portables. Snow machines would surely be better for now. The cold temps have the crack pretty wide, so ATV's need the crack bridged.

We did another ice thickness check yesterday (the 17th). Bare ice, blown free of snow during and since the blizzard, has about 13.5 inches. But there are very few little bare spots. Under the drifts that are 1'-2' deep (about 1/3 of the ice surface), the ice is about 11 inches thick. Where the snow is level (about 6 inches deep and about 1/2 the ice surface), the ice is about 12 inches thick.
So that all said, the plows are tip-toeing around for the next few days, clearing future roads so the ice can grow quicker--another couple inches--to make things more consistently safe for pulling all sizes of houses etc.
This weekend will be ATV only yet from the Red Door. We have the big bridge in place over the crack for the ATV travel. If all goes well, The Red Door Roads will open for general vehicle travel the day after Christmas.
There has been very little fishing being done in The Red Door area this week. Between heavy snows and extreme cold, the Knox Point walleyes have been living in a walleye refuge. So--things are ripe for the taking!

Based on the weekend forecast, The Red Door plows tip-toed back to the tulips yesterday(Thursday), instead of building ice roads that by Sunday could be gone. Hope the forecast is wrong! No need for more snow and wind.
"ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT SNOW STORM WILL AFFECT MOST OF THE REGION SATURDAY MORNING INTO SUNDAY MORNING. TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 6 TO 8 INCHES OR MORE IS POSSIBLE BEFORE THE SNOW TAPERS TO FLURRIES ON SUNDAY. THERE IS STILL SOME UNCERTAINTY REGARDING THE EXACT PATH OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WITH THIS SYSTEM... SO STAY TUNED TO LATER FORECASTS FOR DETAILED SNOW AMOUNTS. IN ADDITION... GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BEHIND THE STORM ON SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT... BRINGING BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIR... AND DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY. "

i went on a little ride through kathio state park on wed. there were only about 4 other sleds that were through in front of us. the trails were not groomed yet, we did see the groomer just north of meat on mille lacs heading north in the ditch of 169. there was alot of power to play in. the lake was full of drifts that you can get alot of air from. i think that after one more snowfall and a good grooming, the trails will be in great shape. if you like blazing the trail and drift blasting, come on up and have a ball..............tom fellegy

Castaway,
The Red Door is perfectly located for riding the snow machines also! Access to the state groomed trail system is easy right from our "back forty". The groomers have been out on the trails this past week and will have all the trails in tip-top riding condition from now through March. And of course, the Mille Lacs ice is a perfect snow machine play ground as well.
Some fishing reports are gradually coming also. Not many fishing this week but some had good reports. A couple reports were "nothing". The locals are doing well in along shore at low light. Most of the good reports have been from deep structure. Bottom line? The bite sounds pretty good if and when you land on fish.
We are ATV/snow machine traffic only this weekend but will be in full swing starting the day after Christmas!
Current forecast? "... WINTER STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST SUNDAY...
MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL SPREAD ACROSS ALL OF NORTHEAST MINNESOTA AND NORTHWEST WISCONSIN THIS MORNING AND CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY... MAKING TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS ACROSS THE ENTIRE REGION THIS WEEKEND. SNOWFALL TOTALS TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY ARE EXPECTED TO BE 8 TO 12 INCHES... WITH HIGHER AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 16 INCHES ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN AREAS AROUND LAKE SUPERIOR.
SNOWFALL RATES WILL BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES... TO AROUND 2 INCHES PER HOUR... WITH VISIBILITIES REDUCED TO NEAR ZERO. IN ADDITION... GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS WILL DEVELOP SUNDAY... RESULTING IN AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW WITH GREATLY REDUCED VISIBILITIES.
THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF ACROSS MOST LOCATIONS SUNDAY EVENING. THE EXCEPTION IS THE SNOW BELT REGION OF NORTHWEST WISCONSIN... WHERE LAKE EFFECT SNOW IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE SUNDAY NIGHT. THE WARNING MAY NEED TO BE EXTENDED FOR THESE SOUTH SHORE AREAS."

Thanks,Ive never stayed at your place but I have landed my boat there many times mostly in the fall.I do have to say you probably have one of the cleanest resorts on the lake and I have been to them all.I have also ran the trails up there many times and figured with all this snow people like me would also like some trail reports.Might also get you some snowmobilers to stay there seeing you are close to the trail system.Seeing I just sold my place up there I might need a room myself down the road

Great to see you guys here Red Door. I just got a house up there this fall and looking forward to seeing a lot of you. Chomps...one season at a time! That's a sweet thought but---It looks like a long winter.
The Red Door has main roads cleared all along the Knox Point fishing grounds as well as out to the Bombeck and Weimer Flat. The crack was an issue yesterday but should become easier to deal with for the coming weekend with warming temps in the forecast. We still found the ice not getting thicker (11 inches) when checking under the deep drifts but for the most part, it is about 15 inches thick. The cleard ice on the roads should grow fast now.
No fishing reports from the past couple days. Temps yesterday morning dipped to 21 below. No one that brave--or crazy?

Unlike the east and south shores of Mille Lacs, the north shore(and west) have multiple mudflats within about a mile of shore. The Weimer and Bombeck are within about a mile of The Red Door. Our roads will most likely head to other flats as well in the near future, such as Pantry, Fletcher, Bitcher, Fishhouse and Resort. Maybe even the Backer. ALL of these flats are within 5 miles of The Red Door and most are within 3 miles. And ALL have a history of good winter and summer fishing.

For the first weekend in at least three, we have no snow storm and or a huge cold front coming in this weekend at The Red Door!
The plan is still in place to start moving houses out today and over the weekend. Warming temps have and will continue to shift the big ice sheet so the crack/bridge will be on constant scrutiny. It's gonna be tough for ATV use off the roads. Not impossible but could result in getting stuck often.
Fishing reports are pretty good for the most part. Surely consistently better than last year for now. From shallow shoreline breaks at low light to the flats, fair walleye action has been the norm with a few skunks along the way as usual. Most walleye action on the flats has been on the top but close to the drop off.

The Red Door was a busy place on Friday! The guys pulled houses all day and fishermen headed out steadily.
By the end of the day, things were getting sloppy on the ice. Temps have hovered around or above freezing for 24 hours. We're hoping the bridge/crack holds up to all the traffic without moving it. We still found 12 inch ice under the deeper snow. We have roads to Bombeck and Weimer and tried to get out to the Pantry but ran into a bad crack that blew water spouts out of the ice when going over it the first trip. After the plow driver changed his underwear, going to the Pantry and further was put on hold.
So, we should have some fishing reports, finally, by tonight. Stay tuned!

After a session moving the bridge first thing in the morning, all went well at The Red Door Saturday.
Fishing reports were fairly good. Some limits of walleyes were taken. Some got just a couple and yes, the usual "tough fishing" reports were in the mix too. Again, the locations varied along with depths. Some got'em on the flats, and some got'em on the deep shoreline areas-- 22'-24'. Not much, yet, on the perch front.

The Red Door was a busy place this past weekend. The weather was nice and ice conditions were pretty good as well. Many of the houses are now on the ice with more on their out way this week.
Fishing reports were the good old "spotty" type. Sunday was slower than Saturday. Several pairs of anglers had their 8 keepers for the weekend but many reported 0 to 2 walleyes for the weekend. Not many perch being reported. One jumbo here, two jumbos there or none.
The plows will try to open roads to some of the other flats this week. The heavy snow combined with heavy houses have created some flooding. Be sure to block the houses at least 4 inches off the ice to start and maybe more. Some houses had 4-6 inches of water come up after drilling. As the ice gets thicker and the snow stays away (we hope), the flooding should be less but it is ALWAYS a factor.

Monday fishing reports were on the slow side.
The plow trucks ran into an active crack while trying to get to more mud flat country and had to turn around. Hopefully things will change soon so we can branch out to areas many want to fish also.
Garrison weather forecast:
... WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM CST THIS AFTERNOON...
... A WINTER STORM WARNING MAY BE NEEDED IF HEAVIER SNOW SHIFTS NORTH...
LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW WILL CONTINUE THIS MORNING... AND WILL PERSIST INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON. THERE WILL BE A 3 TO 5 HOUR PERIOD OF HEAVIER SNOWFALL RATES... UP TO 1 INCH PER HOUR... FROM MID MORNING TO EARLY AFTERNOON. THIS WILL RESULT IN VISIBILITY LESS THAN A HALF MILE... RAPID SNOW ACCUMULATION... AND HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS. STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATION FROM 4 TO 6 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BY THE TIME SNOW TAPERS TO FLURRIES BY MID AFTERNOON.
THE SNOW WILL BE FOLLOWED BY VERY COLD AIR AND STRONGER NORTHWEST WINDS TUESDAY NIGHT... WHICH WILL PRODUCE LOCAL AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW IN EXPOSED AREAS.. AND WIND CHILLS OF 20 TO 30 BELOW ZERO TUESDAY NIGHT.

There were some pretty good reports from The Red Door ice today. Several fishermen reported catching some big ones--from 25"-27". Not many keepers though. Most of the action seemed to come from mudflat country. The bigger fish came from the TOP of the flat, right where the edge starts. At the "peak". Rattle reels/red hook/tail hooked minnows sounded like the trick.
Happy, healthy and a prosperous New Year to ALL!

While the weather man (luckily) was off on the snow amounts for the weekend, The Red Door fishing reports improved some more. A handfull of walleye limts for 2 angler groups, quite a few reports of 2-4 "too big" walleyes and a few pretty good jumbo perch reports made up most of the chatter. The perch reports came from 27'-29' along the deep mucky flat shoreline areas out from the Knox point area. Walleye reports fame from the various mud flat haunts.

The Red Door fishing reports have been and are pretty steady the past few days. Most anglers are catching a few fish including some fair perch reports from the deep 28'-30' mucky areas west of Knox Point. We've extended the roads into that area now. Walleyes are showing up more on the flats with the top of the flat (close to the drop offs) being the best bet--no matter the time of day. Not great by any means but much better than last year!

The Red Door has historically plowed roads to Weimer, Bombeck, Pantry, Fletcher, the south end of Resort and sometimes to Fish House and Backer. But this winter, with the exception of Weimer and Bombeck, access to those flats has been and still is blocked with a "live" crack running east and west that crosses north of the Pantry, crosses the middle of Resort and goes west from there, crossing the south end of Matton and beyond.
Although many Red Door perms have ther favorite spots on those flats, it's been decided to not bridge the crack 2 miles from shore. (typically the "live" crack is always with a 1/4 mile of shore.) Understanding more mudflat country needs to be added, The Red Door extended the road system west yesterday. Into a new frontier for The Red Door.
The road now extends from the Bombeck west to the northeast end of resort and all the way over to the east side of Matton. The Matton is the same distance as the Fletcher from The Red Door. Doing so adds the north half of the east edge of the Resort and the north edge of the Resort flat as well as the prime, north 2/3 of the steep east bank on Matton flat.
More than 2 miles of mudflat drop off added to The Red Door fishing grounds!

The Red Door area finally had a nice weekend without snow, wind and with plenty of sunshine. Fishing reports were the usual mix with quite a few saying they got a couple "too big" walleyes, some saying they got quite a few "too big" walleyes (one house had 8 big ones on Saturday), a few big perch for the pan and then some who had "zero" bites. Again, the perch action was better along the deeper mucky bottoms(25'-30') along shore and the walleye action was better in mudflat country.
The trend, unlike reports from other Mille Lacs fishing grounds, is that when a walleye is landed it's a keeper or "too big". The little 7"-12" walleyes showing up in numbers(according to reports) are far and few between in the northern Mille Lacs area.

The Red Door is a "dern'd" cold place right now. Extreme cold has led to extreme quiet as well. In other words, fishermen are being smart!
A few brave(or crazy) anglers have been out the past 2-3 days and although dealing with an extreme cold front, have caught a handfull of walleyes...again mostly big ones. Many are in the 25" range with 27" plus fish mixed in quite often. Handfull?? 2-3 fish per house. Some lucky (or sharper) anglers are getting 6-8 a day but there are zero's too.
The weekend is looking good weather-wise! All the roads are good at this point but one never knows as temps changing can move the ice in a heartbeat. The north half of the Resort Flat is now open as well as the north half of Matton Flat. ATV's might stay on top of the hard packed snow now but might find a deeper drift with slush in it yet also.
AND! The new cabins are coming along just fine. Kitchens are being put into place now and the tile is going onto bathroom walls as well. Summer bookings for the new cabins are coming in so if you have potential plans for soft water, nows the time to lock into your favorite dates.
See ya'll this weekend!

This past weekend ended as being slower fishing than the past 2-3 weekends for many. Houses that were getting several fish a day got very few if any this past weekend. Of course, the exception to the rule stood out also. A handfull of reports were good. Yesterday a couple good catches came in too. But again....generally tough! The common reasoning? Last weeks artic blast. Who knows....
After a weekend that saw an inch of snow get blown around by 20-30mph. north winds, plugging up roads and fish house driveways as soon as soon as the they'd get cleared, the road system is looking good. The "live" crack has now moved right along shore--at least for now. Although it will possibly need chopping down or bridging as temps change, it's always nice to deal with a foot of water under and around the crack than 30ft. Hope it stays tight along shore!
Halfway through the winter, The Red Door says THANK YOU to all and looks forward to another month or more of seeing you on the ice and the trails.

The Red Door plow trucks heated up the tranny fluid yesterday and broke trail to the south tip of the Resort Flat. The concrete like snow, now only a foot or less deep is all they could handle on the initial trek. As always, the road follows(in the deep water about 200ft. from the drop off) the contour of the east side of the flat all the way out and around the southwest corner. The crack that was preventing travel to the south is now healed.
By the end of the week (before the weekend), the plows hope to have access to both the Pantry Flat and the Fletcher Flat. No promises....but "hope".
With this ongoing fish hunting via snow plow, The Red Door will have direct access to over five miles of actual mudflat drop offs! Gentleman.....start your augers! Ready? Set? DRILL!!!!!

The Red Door plows opened the door to the Pantry yesterday. Will the shelves be stocked?
Also, the road to Fletcher Flat is now wide open and fair game.
Looks to be an okay weekend weather-wise. Just a typical winter weekend in The Red Door country. The groomers have been working hard to knock down the bumps on the snow machine trails. No fresh snow makes it a little tougher to do but the Tucker does it's best.
See ya'll this weekend. Call ahead if you need anything done on the ice with your house etc.

The Red Door news from the past weekend? Look up the results for the Brainerd Jaycees contest on Gull. Yup--that's where many of The Red Door crowd ventured. In other words...it was the quietest weekend of the winter.
So not many fishing reports. Word of several 25"-27" walleyes were reported from the various mudflats and tullibee/perch reports came from the deep shoreline areas.
Next weekend is shaping up to be a busy one however. Ice conditions continue to improve without new snow. Long range weather forecasts show a good fishing week and weekend coming up. Call asap if you have plans in the bucket!

Quiet! That's the word at The Red Door this week.
This coming weekend is shaping up to be the nicest of the winter. Warm temps and pretty easy fishing conditions should make things busy and fun for all.
Ice travel conditions are pretty good with zero new snow and a hard snow surface to travel on for both ATV's and snow machines. Still bring a shovel with ATV's. Travel with trucks cross country is possible but one could stop in the wrong place and high center in a hard drift yet.
Roads are open to the Fletcher, Pantry, Weimer, Bombeck, Matton and both ends of the Resort flat. If you need a driveway plowed for your wheel-house--let us know.
Snow machine trails are still pretty good but without snow are in a "used" condition. Good riding conditions for sure.
If you need work done or want a move made with your Perm, call asap before the weekend.
The Red Door country will be a good place to be this weekend!

What are you thoughts on the bite with the upcoming stable weather, with apparently nicer temps. The jumbo perch bite can't be too far off, is it??

One house landed 7 Jumbo's in a half hour Tuesday--then had to leave unexpectedly. This was 29ft. along shore west of Red Door and Knox Point.
Many mudflat houses are now moving into deeper water outside the flat to pursue perch. That's where the better perch bite should be--if they are there.
More warm, bright sunny days should invite more aggressive perch hunting and catching. "should...."

The Red Door fishing reports were the best of the season this past weekend. Although, as usual, a few skunks and "slow" comments came in, more "pretty good" and "great" reports from the warm but windy weekend were the norm. Perch catches were best in the 27'-30' depths along shore and from the deep sides of the mudflats. The best walleye reports came from the 22'-24' range on top of the flats...right next to the edge. One Iowa angler landed a 4 walleye "keeper" limit in a short Friday evening mudflat trip.
Long range weather outlooks show another WARM weekend on the way so hole-hopping should, again, have good potential next weekend.
THANK YOU to all who traveled to Red Door country this past weekend!!

My first post - I'm a fellow Red Door'er as well. Saw quite a few walleyes with the camera this past weekend on the edge of Bombeck's. Getting them to bite, however, continues to be rather difficult. Lotsa lookers, few takers. Moving baits (jigging) seems to get more of a response than deadsticking or bobbers. Tried the north end of Resort flat for a while (until the wind tried to turn our portables into parasails). Got a few better perch out there. We'll try 'er again this weekend.

Try tipping a jigging spoon with a few waxies or a crappie minnow.Might get some walleyes too.

Fishing reports from this past weekend slacked off a little from the weekend before. Best perch action came from the deep, muddy/buggy 28'-30' shoreline areas. Average walleye catches of 50/50 keepers and big ones ran about 2-4 fish per house on the flats with a few from the perch country as well. Some got a few more and others got 1 or none.
As posted earlier, the lake and roads are quite flooded from the past 3 days of rain and above freezing temps. ATV travel and 4x4 truck travel should be fine but until things freeze up, snow machines are having trouble pushing through the water and slush. Colder nights should firm things up by the weekend--we hope. In the meantime, the flooded roads and fishing grounds are being drained as we best we can by drilling holes scattered throughout the system and allowing the water to drain back down into the lake. Knee high boots will be a plus if the water/slush on top isn't solid by the weekend.
CONTRARY TO SOME TWIN CITY TV WEATHER "EXPERT" OPINIONS, THE ICE IS SAFE AND NOT "UNRELIABLE" DUE TO THE RECENT WARM TEMPS AND RAIN AT MILLE LACS.
Again...THANK YOU to all who visited The Red Door this past week!

"Pull Sally! Pull!!" is what The Red Door trucks hear these days. Those words mark the beginning of the end. Another week and the horizon as viewed from Wealthwood Shores will be a sharp contrast to the view of the past 10 weeks.
Fishing reports from this second to last weekend of the walleye season were okay or even pretty good---for perch hunters. Again....the deep mucky/buggy water both east and west of The Red Door were the best perch producers. One house reported "20 jumbos" yesterday with many reporting double digit catches over the weekend. A few walleyes mixed the perch bag. Walleye action reports from the flats were scarce. Perch catches from the deep around the flats was tough as well.
THANK YOU to all who we've seen in the past few days in Red Door country.

Sally is tired and in hibernation until next December. The big houses are ALL off. BUT!!
As long as conditions allow, The Red Door will maintain it's lake access to perch country. Perch hunters this past weekend and now this week report pretty good catches consistently. Limits have been common--of keepers. 25'-30' of water along the mucky shoreline has been best with all the typical perch techniques. Small baits...light line.
So...it should be a good perchin' weekend coming up out from The Red Door! (we hope)

The ice surface is snow covered (2"-4")and just fine for the snow machines. If the forecast holds, another 3-6 inches of snow will fall before the weekend with some drifting from predicted heavy northwest winds. All forms of travel should be okay but it wouldn't hurt to have a shovel handy. As the weekend gets closer, if need be, we will update The Red Door area ice conditions.
The new snow should enhance the snow machine trails as well. Maybe a good time for one last weekend of trail-riding? The state trails connect directly to The Red Door's north 40--a direct drive from the motel and cabins!

The new cabins now have appliances installed and most of the furniture in place. Updated pics will be on the Net soon!
The Red Door Sugerbush is steaming full speed ahead. The weather finally has turned the prime sugar maples into sap gushers the past two days. The cooker has been rolling full bore around the clock. The crew across the road reports 1200 gallons the past 48 hours.
The lake access is still open but this will be the last weekend. The driveways and shoreline are getting way too muddy and soft for anymore traffic.

Hey All! Happy Opening Weekend!
Just a quick "wish you all luck and safety this weekend".
The Red Door is ready to see and meet you all! The harbor is waiting with ample water this spring. Just idle straight out until you reach 4-5ft. and you should be fine. Please check into the office and ask about parking etc. We'll do all we can do make your opening weekend the best of the best!
Fishing tip(guess) for the weekend? Cold front with off-shore winds should put the bite a little deeper, especially after 8am. Very SLOW Lindy rigs with a leech on a long leader and SMALL plain in 16' to 25' should be a key way to get'em. We hope!
Again, THANK YOU and good luck!

"Mid-day" fishermen are reporting spotty success. Some report as many as 20 walleyes for 3 guys since 8 am. and some report one or two fish total. Unlike last opener, MOST boats are getting a few or more. Walleyes over the 18" mark are dominate in all reports. Many 27" inchers have been reported but none over 28" have been reported out of The Red Door yet.
Northerly breezes are keeping the lake very fishable. Occasional rain/mist showers are passing through but NO SNOW! Less wind tomorrow and very little chance of rain so things should be as good or better.
Mid-day catches have, as predicted, come from around 20' give or take a couple. Light long Lindy rigs and leeches have been the ticket. And the bobbers should sink this evening in about 8' to 12'. Stay tuned.....

The evening bite, for those that weren't already fished out from a hard day on the water, was pretty good. The keeper to throw back rate went up to about 50 percent as many of the smaller fish are still in the shallow water and most of the daytime fishermen were out deeper. Several pairs of bobbers produced limits of keepers around dusk.
Traffice Sunday morning, as usual, is much slower in waking up. Sun's out and not much wind. Overall, a GREAT Opener at The Red Door!

Hey Red Door!! Nice fishing up there this weekend! We used the launch Saturday, and I would like to make one observation if I could? Please put a sign out at the entrance telling people to use the left road for putting in and taking out, and go straight out for parking and leaving. You have a beautiful ramp there! Easy in and easy out when everyone is doing the same thing. I talked to a number of folks who had mentioned the same thing...
I love the new upgrades to the resort! It is arguably the nicest resort on the lake in my opinion!
