Rainy Lake, Minnesota fishing report 3-21-09

by Chris Granrud on 03/21/2009

16.5 Daze PB!! 2lb 9 oz!!
Ok.... In all honesty I'll jump over 30 inch walleyes for 2lb crappies. Not sure if I can explain why, but sliding 2lb SUPER FREAKS onto the ice with the sun illuminating the yellow/gold coloration of thes big humpbacks makes me do crazy things!! Maybe it is because we focus energy chasing Rainy MONSTER EYES 80 percent of the time... WHO KNOWS!! A big DAZE CAMP SHOUTOUT to Custom Jigs and Spins for making the dominant panfish products!! I have been movin-n-groovin with the number one hole hopping panfish set up!! DIAMOND JIGS!!!!! I caught a PB yesterday with this 16.5 inch freshwater TARPON!!

Daze Smackdown!!
When slabs begin to stage for the spawn crappie anglers across the state get the fever. You know what I'm talking about?? The fever that keeps you up all night and studying map contours and finds you dozing up waking up in cold sweats hollering FISH FISH FISH!! Oh... Sorry... SLABS ON THE MIND!! YIKES!! "Go back to sleep honey" Thanks Queen for understanding!! I've got it BAD!! If your not fired up about icing 2lb FREAKS please see the doctor immediately !! Pay the extra $5.00 for the SANITY SCAN!! My guess would be the local DOC is going to suggest you need a shot of Rainy Lake Baby!!! These fish are awesome and as I've mentioned earlier this is setting up for a GIANT SLAB SHOWDOWN where the Daze Team expects to be matching wits with big Papermouths this spawn in BIG NUMBERS!! Yep it will be a Pay Per View, so bring your friends!!

Look close at this photo!!
This Pike won the battle
with someone this summer,but
not this winter!! Nice
Tackle Plus fish!!
Now if your thinking... Panfish?? SIGH... I'm a BIG FISH GUY!! OK Then Boys!! The pike are getting ready to roll and some 10lb plus pike are giving their best toothy smiles for IDO for your viewing pleasure!! Quick 101 on catching big Rainy Lake Gators!! Find fish, Dig heels in the snow, and give them the beans!! Flags and ciscoes on spawning edges leadig to deep water or deepwater patterns are top producers!! As always I like the fight, so I'm usually fishing lighter rod set-ups than most. I like to effectively fight and release fish, but always opt for a bit lighter than a bit heavier set-ups. I also am a firm believer that a lighter rod set up allows anglers better rod flex and recoil to keep necessary tension to keep hooks in fish!!

Back to Back 16.5 and 15.5's
Within 10 minutes!!
Long and short of the matter is the fish are Fat and Sassy!! Come on up and showcase your "Fish Whispering" There has been a lot of sweet talkin by Daze, Friends and Clients!! Goes something like this...."Oh I see you... You want a little bit of this?? Oh she's coming up guys, she's racing... Oh..Oh...OH.....OH............LIGHTS OUT FOR YOU!!! LIGHTS OUT!! FISH!! FISH!! AND THATS ANOTHER ONE FOR ME!! GRAB MY MARCUM!! HOLY **** Look a that thing!! KNUCKLE BUSTER.... KNUCKLE BUSTER!! NICE!!" Now you see what your missing!! Daze Big Fish Whispering services are not to be taken lightly!! All clients must sign waivers for possible back pain and tooth cuts from this Trophy wrestling!! Best spring trip times for Slabs plus other Rainy Lake beasts will be 3rd week of may until 1st week of June general timeframe. PIke Showdown is so close I can smell it!! Book it Dano!! See you on the fish!! Tight Lines Team!!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the responses. We work really hard to stay on top of big slabs. They are a treasured fish through my guide service as are the other Trophy caliber fish including Walleyes, Pike, Smallies and Gils. Really looking forward to getting after them for a couple more weeks and then back on them again in May for the spawn. If you haven't experienced these big papermouths shaking their big heads on top of the water your really missing out!!

Yep I think the stringer mount might be a bit spendy!!
