Hey Everyone, I pulled in an amazing Sunfish today but I am having trouble identifying exactly what it is. Let me know what you think.

Judging by the Gill Plate....Red Ear......

It looks like a Blue Gill to me... the colors vary a lot...looks like a Shellcracker (southern Bluegill).... They get darker purple along the back as big Bulls like yours...here is a pic

I brought up the colors a tad to see better...also could be a Sunny/Gill hybrid...

I was also thinking Pumpkinseed. If it is it is real close to the record!

Chad, nice first post!
I would guess it's a hybrid.
I wish I could see it's dorsal fin better.

You could email the picture to the email address below and see what they say. I would be curious to hear the answer.

Thanks for your help everyone, I was really curious because it was close to a state record in some areas. The fish ended up at 1lb 3oz and 10 inches in length.

Scales look way different than yours though.

Obviously don't say exactly where but did you catch this fish in the metro?
Also I did neglect to say nice fish and welcome to IDO in my first post.

I was always told that the ones that have the neon blue lines on there gills and face were pumpkin seeds, now I want to know!

Definitley a green sunfish-pumpkinseed cross. We catch them in deer lake in western wisconsin all the time. It gets the dark green color from the green sunfish and the weird blue stripes on the gill from a pumpkinseed. Nice fish!!!
