I haven't been there since they put the new dam in. Just wondering if there have been noticeable changes in the fishing quality. Positives & negatives?
I have heard the fishing isn't as good as it used to be. But that could be because of the low water we have had since the dam was completed. Who knows. I used to fish there when I was younger and did well on walleyes with a jig and a twister tail. Haven't been there in about 10 years.
There is surprisingly enough a lot of people that still go and fish down there. I have been down there once this year to fish and didn't catch one single fish. I have been hearing reports of people actually catching some though. I know last year there were a lot of carp down there and a few people bow fishing. IMO the great fishing of years past down there are gone. That will be my final fishing trip to the old river and dam.
I had lots of great memories as a kid down there. I know at least one year I spent most of the summer down at the dam and the RR bridge dam.
I liked fishing the south side the best. Right next to the "drowning machine".
We were catching bullies by the hundreds there and some younger kid wanted to learn to take them off the hook without getting stuck, so for about a half hour he took all of them off. Well, I didn't know the Game Warden was on the bridge watching us. He saw my dad later that day and told him that "if I couldn't take off my own fish, I shouldn't be fishing".
It didn't bother me too much as I explained it to Dad and he's seen me take off plenty of fish...but I've always remembered that...and I think it's very funny now that I use hundreds of bullies for bait each year.
Things are aways what they seem.
Although I don't get out that way for fishing too much, I'll miss the old dam too. But the fish are still going to be there...just not in the same spot. Someone will take the time to find them...sooner or later.
