Sounds like fun. I have never targeted crappies with crank baits but have caught a few on them. Maybe small Rapala Rattlin Raps or shad raps. Have caught crappies on both of them before. Maybe small stick baits would work also.

They're called "peanut" baits and several tackle companies offer them. Yozuri has a line of very decent baits and Mepps/MisterTwister offers a few. Snoop around and you'll find them. Don't forget Rapala....they make a #1 size in the count-down thats a winner for casting to weedlines.

They sure seem to like Wally Divers. I caught several last week on #5 Wally Divers. Most of them were on the front hooks.

I've been hearing a lot of reports, and some first hand experience, of crappies coming on the Mississippi in a back water lake. Trolling #4 and 5 jointed and #5 plain Shad Raps for walleyes.
I bought a ton of crankbaits at a yard sale years ago, with mess of #3 Shad Raps, countdowns, and original floating minnows as well as a mess of jointed minnows. I've had some good success casting these for crappies in the shallows, but I would think they would be excellent trolled as well.

We have been using #5 wally divers and have been picking up crappies as short as 6" and as long as 14". You look at this 6" crappie with a 3" crank bait in it's mouth and think....its going to be a good day

This would be cool... I've never caught a crappie on a crank, only stillfishing with minnows. I caught some trout on a Rapala and a softbody jig last year, but never panfish ('cept once when I was flyfishing with a 1/2" beetle crank bait).
That "beetle" was what I think CT was referring to as a "peanut bait"... they really are shaped like a peanut! I was actually using one on a fly rod and catching decent sunnies with it in a spot where the sunnies are almost always really stunted.

I HAVE HAD SOME LUCK IN MID-SUMMER W/ RAPALA 2" SHALLOW RUNNER 3'-6' 3/16OZ. PERCH COLORED RAP. JUST TROLLING. YOU WOULD BE AMAZED @ HOW SMALL A CRAPPIE WILL HIT THIS PUPPY BUT IF I AM GOING TO TROLL I WOULD RATHER USE A 1/8OZ JIG W/PLASTICS -GRUBS/TWISTERS/SHAD BODIES. IAM NEW TO THIS SITE AND AM SUPRISED THERE IS SUCH OLD POSTS!! IS EVERYONE HUNTING OR WHAT? OR IS IT JUST TO COLD FOR YOU GUYS?

The best way to run cranks for crappies once they are done spawning is to three-way rig them. I will run these along weed edges and pick up really nice slabs all summer/fall.

This weeks In Fisherman Critical Concepts show had a segment on trolling cranks for crappies. They were using really small rapala's and I think blue foxes.
Good Luck

Bosman: Last summer I was catching huge black crappie up around New Albin on 4 inch Storm Thundercranks while walleye fishing. They don't have to be small. See you on the water soon. Jim

really great article in In fishermen a while back about 3 way rigs and crankbaits... really made me think... I've caught alot of crappie while bass fishing with 'full' size crankbaits. also on big husky jerks. If your looking to stock up, take a look at Norman baits in your bass pro catalog. deep baby N is real nice. many colors to choose from but I like the Sunshine Lavendar shad. awesome color with small sharp hooks. gets down deep with 6# test. that and a chart color and you should be set. enjoy!
