MN DNR Catfish Survey and Diary

#794674 - 06/16/09 12:06 AM

The survey is finally up on the web, press release may be coming out about this tomorrow too.

It should be good to go and I will send out instructions and the spreadsheet based on the information collected in this 12 question survey.

Tagging fish has been a little slow so far. Hoping things will pick up with the water temps coming back up.

Thanks for your help Ido.

....and the news release.

**********************

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is beefing up
efforts to manage catfish in metro region rivers, and it’s looking for
a few avid anglers to help.

The project will include DNR tagging catfish to get a better idea of
their population and movement. It also will draw upon catfish anglers
who are willing to answer a few survey questions and keep diaries of
their angling efforts. The angler diaries will provide valuable
information that is not typically obtained in standard creel surveys,
because many catfish anglers fish at night.

Anglers willing to take the 12-question survey can do so online at
www.surveymonkey.com/catfish. Anglers may also send an e-mail to
MetroEast.Catfish@dnr.state.mn.us or call 651-259-5806 to request
that a paper copy of the survey be mailed to them.

Anglers who catch and release a tagged catfish should record the
species, length, tag number, location caught, and release the fish with
the tag in place. Anglers who harvest a tagged fish should record the
same information and report the fish as harvested. Anglers not
participating in the catfish angler diary program can still report
tagged fish locations using the MDNR website
www.dnr.state.mn.us/fisheries/tagged_fish_reporting/index.html or by
contacting the phone number or e-mail address listed above.

Catfish are becoming more and more popular with Minnesota anglers, and
metro rivers are fertile waters for big cats. The state record flathead
catfish, weighing 70 pounds, was caught on the St. Croix River in
Washington County, and the record channel cat was pulled from the
Mississippi River in Hennepin County.

Just got an email from Fisheries Specialist Stiras. Apparently the first email he sent to me bounced. I am really excited about this one as it looks like the DNR is putting a lot of effort into this one.

I might have a meeting in the winter to invite people to sit in on a presentation of our recent catfish work.

I told him if he does, expect a big turnout. Don't forget to log your catches fellow catties!

Joel emailed me a heads up about an article about the program in the Pioneer Press. Read it here -> Catfish Angling Catching On.

Quote:

Last week, the DNR put out a call to Twin Cities catfish anglers to fill out an online survey; Stiras has received 80 responses so far.

He found a Web site selling a 30-pound bucket of cheese trimmings for $21.

"Guess I might have to wait for another fiscal year to make that purchase," he said, sighing.

The greatest resource we have in MN and it does not have a comparable budget. It's time we got a cat guy in the legislature. Heck, the Governor's office. Vote Pug.

Pug for Governor? I'm in!

Sounded like the Metro Channel Cat stocking program is running out of cash too.

I'm not even going to start on our Gov. and Dedicated Funding.

But alas, if this survey were for eyes or bass, there would be 800 or 8000 that responded by now.

We all need to do our part...take a walleye guy cat fishing this month!

I am in! I told them to give me a call. Hopefully I can help out.

I read the paper article and it seems like they are having a hard time catching the flatheads. Maybe I can help.

The last email I got from him mentioned they had gotten a couple 40#+ flatheads, so that is good news. There should be an Outdoor News article coming out, as they tagged (pun intended?) along with him on one of his trips. I asked him to give me a heads up so I could let everyone know.

An idea I was thinking of would be to design a secure webpage for the DNR to be able to post pics and all other nessesaries in one place so that we can see some progress in what is being reported rather than everyone sending thiers in at the end of the year.

MPLSPUG GET ON THIS!! MAYBE WE COULD EVEN USE A VERSION OF YOUR SITE!

Alls im saying is that we could make this a little more high tech than an excel spread sheet.

I got an email from him saying there was an article in the Outdoor News July 2 about the study if you are interested.

audemp it's hard to go high tech with the budget Joel has for this. Which is next to nothing.

I hear what your saying though....I'm just happy there's someone that's even thinking of the fastest growing segment of the fishing population.

Another heads up, people who have signed up for this should have gotten an email today. He is looking for confirmation of people getting the instructions and Excel file.

Here is the email...
Quote:

Greetings,

I am sending this follow up e-mail to anglers I have sent the Excel catfish angler diary file to one by one as I have encountered a few problems here and there with e-mails bouncing back to me. I have also started to wonder if many of them are being filtered into junk e-mail folders. Some of the e-mails I sent to multiple parties as blind copies with the file attachment, and those may be the most likely messages to be filtered. If you would, please reply to this e-mail and confirm whether or not you have received any previous message from me and if you have received the file and instructions/options. (I know some of you have gotten it, but please reply to this message anyway.) It may be necessary to add this e-mail address to your list of "safe recipients" so they won't be filtered as junk in the future.

Also, the e-mail address is being altered in the near future from (PM me for email address) to (PM me for email address). The "dnr" portion of the address will be dropped statewide.

Thank you for your time and your patience.

I've taken out the email address because there is a possibility a spam bot could scrap the address and clutter up his inbox with ads for enlarging that certain part of the male anatomy. Otherwise if you can decode the following

MetroEast Catfish at dnr state mn us to MetroEast Catfish at state mn us.

Just replace the at with the at symbol and replace the spaces with periods.
