Starting to get a bit concerned with my '99 Merc. The thing has used only about a quart or two in the past two tankfuls of gas. I'm guessing 50 gallons or so?
I'm using a semi-synthetic, not sure if that matters or not.
Anyone else have that motor that can comment on normal oil consumption?
Anyone else comment on what might be wrong if it's starting to use less oil? Is there an oil pump in there that could be failing?

I would be concerned too. Even my 150 opti uses more oil than that!
I'd take it in. I don't know much about the EFI oil pumps.

Reguardless you should be around a gallon or so, to put you in the 50:1 ball park. Sure the motor probably doesn't always run at 50:1, but I think you ought to be fairly close. I know I use a large chunk of my oil res per tank. (though I run a yamaha)

Thanks for the advice guys.
Just thinking about what could be going wrong in there as long as the entire system is pressurized (no leaky hose, fitting, or res. cap)?

How hard have you been running it and how big is your gas tank? If you are running in the 3 to 4k range and have a fairly small tank you may be ok. Lots of variables but it does sound light.

Talked to a marine tech at LaCanne's Marine in Faribault who was incredibly knowledgeable.
From what he said, I shouldn't have too much to worry about. I guess the pump in those is variable, based on RPM's, and the guy hasn't ever had to replace one. He suspected I was running it easier and/or switched oils. He was right on both accounts. I'm running the semi-synthetic Cabelas oil now, but may switch to the factory recommended stuff if I am still concerned. From his explanation, which makes sense, different oils can have quite a bit different viscosities and burn at different rates. It would make sense that the older cheap dino-fuel I was using would burn up easier and require more to keep the engine lubed.
Granted, it's one opinion, but I fished P4 on Friday. the level line moved down a bit, and I only burned a few gallons of fuel. Hopefully I'm done with this!
Thanks for all the advice!

Joel: My 175 Merc efi uses little oil too. I use Amsoil Injector. I think part of the reason I may think it uses little oil is my boat has a 2.5 gallon oil tank. I don't fill it very often.
