fly fishing using a hopper

#812337 - 08/19/09 12:53 PM

Hi, Help me out please. I am using a grasshopper for trout but I cannot get a hit. I get looks but no hits. I am using 6x tippet with hoppers from Dan Baily's tackle shop that really look realistic. I use flotation spray to keep them up. I have tried drifting or twitching. No hits! Any help would be appreciated!

I'd see if I could catch a few hoppers from the surrounding area and then compare them to your flies. In particular, are they similar sized? Next would be color. Sounds like you must be close if your getting them to take a look rather than run away.

Size makes a difference as Rootski said. Also, I always use at least a 9' leader with another 2-3' of tippet. You have to watch the drift as well if it is moving too fast or too slow will cause fish not to strike. Good Luck!
